TTC#1 after Mirena removal

Mirena is out next week so we can begin TTC #1 (Hooray!).

I've had the Mirena coil for 8 years now, and no periods during that time at all. How long after removing your coil did you periods return? How long did it take you to conceive? DH convinced it'll happen within a month. He has no idea...

Shameless bumping...

My friend conceived within 8 weeks of Mirena removal. She's 30 and had it in for 7 years.

EastDulwichWife · 10/08/2017 14:38

Wow! Superfast!

Not saying that's the norm btw, but it is possible!
Is this your first baby?

EastDulwichWife · 10/08/2017 14:42

Yup! So no idea how long it'll take and feeling nervous about when I'll get my periods back / start ovulating etc. I have a feeling the first month might be a write off, since I don't know when we should DTD... Feeling very excited (and nervous!!).

Good luck!
Out of interest, how did you manage to get a Mirena? I have 2 friends, both have no children and their GP won't agree to a Mirena! One has gone to a family planning clinic who said it's not usually advised but did it anyway, the other gave up and got an implant.

EastDulwichWife · 10/08/2017 14:53

Really?! Seems a little unfair. I was prepped for the pain and told it might hurt more because I didn't have children, but they didn't put up many barriers. Had it removed about 3 years ago and they put another straight in. I won't lie, it hurt like hell, but for me the benefits outweigh the fitting agony! If we're lucky enough to get pregnant I'd have another fitted afterwards.

I'm 36 and had my mirena for just over 18 months. I had it out on 7th June and am now 8 weeks pregnant! It was somewhat of a surprise as it took 2 miscarriages and 9 months to conceive DD.

EastDulwichWife · 10/08/2017 15:03

Crikey gigernut! That's fantastic - what a shocker that must have been! Huge congratulations to you, that's so exciting.

For the sake of balance... Had my Mirena out July 2016 to TTC no. 1, didn't conceive until February and then had three miscarriages in a row. However, got regular periods back almost immediately (had one 36 day cycle and then regularish 32 days one from there), so don't think my problems were anything to do with the coil - and in fact women with it seem to regularise much more quickly than those who took the pill. Sorry for the depressing story, but thought it was misleading to only have best case scenarios!

LisaSimpsonsbff · 10/08/2017 16:23

I was 29 when I had it removed and had had it for four years, by the way

WineAndTiramisu · 10/08/2017 16:49

Periods back immediately (but still had light ones during mirena), took 9 months to conceive, had it in for about 4 years

Writerwannabe83 · 10/08/2017 16:55

I have had two mirenas on both occasions (when I had them removed for TTC purposes) I was pregnant within 5 weeks.

However, I continued to have periods whilst having a Mirena and apparently (so says my GP) women generally get pregnant quicker following removal when this is the case.

EastDulwichWife · 10/08/2017 17:00

Lisa, sorry to hear you haven't had an easy run of it. Sounds really tough, I hope you're okay. Also, it's all about balance - this is real life after all - so don't apologise!

Wine and Writer - interesting that you both had periods throughout. I hadn't heard that that can make it easier to get back into the swing, though I suppose it makes sense.

And the answer is... how long is a piece of string?! Just want it out now and want to get cracking!

That's interesting - I didn't have periods (which was one of my favourite things about the Mirena!). I guess it does make sense that that might mean it would take longer to get back to 'normal'.

Writerwannabe83 · 10/08/2017 17:34

They only lasted about three days and were much lighter than they were pre-Mirena but they were on a regular 35 day cycle.

Poptart4 · 10/08/2017 18:51

I had the mirena coil in for 4 years. Got it taken out in May 2012, was pregnant by June 2012. Got caught straight away Grin

Got my second coil out yesterday but not gonna start trying until September/October. Hoping it's just as quick this time

Just had my 2nd coil taken out yesterday so hopefully it happens just as fast this time. Though not trying until September / October

Poptart4 · 10/08/2017 18:57

Sorry don't know why that posted 3 times Blush

Just to add I never had a period with my mirena coil and I still fell straight away.

EastDulwichWife · 11/08/2017 08:25

Loads of different experiences. I hope I catch the falling straight away from you, pop! Very exciting re No.2. Hope he/she comes as easily for you!
