Vitamins?!

Hi all,
I just wondered what you all thought about vitamins and supplements?
I have always taken generic multivitamins but know during pregnancy I should limit my vitamin A and therefore should change to a pregnancy supplement.... I have a stash of pregnecare vitamins ready to go in the cupboard!! But my question is when should I change? Confused

We are ttc at the moment but if I change now I could be in for several months of expense with the pregnecare supplements without actually being pregnant but equally don't want to do any harm in very early pregnancy if I keep taking the normal ones until I find out!

Any advice for a novice?

Happy to be told I'm over analysing and not to worry Blush

Are you taking separate folic acid? If not you do need to change as it really is important to take folic acid early in pregnancy if you possibly can. I'd compromise with something for TTC but cheaper than pregnacare - Tesco do an own brand pregnancy multivitamin for a fraction of the pregnacare price. You could also consider ditching the multivitamin altogether and just having the folic acid - for most people that's all they need.

I just take folic acid.
I've read according to google that pregnacare etc affect cycle length.

physicskate · 09/08/2017 19:06

My gp said to take folic acid 3 months before ttc. I get mine at Morrisons. It's a few pounds for several months' supply.

Alpinebetony9911 · 09/08/2017 19:32

Thanks everyone.
There is folic acid in my multivitamins and I know my levels are normal because I have just had a blood test for other reasons. I take a multivitamin because by folic acid and b12 levels were really low and this has kept them within the correct ranges so I am reluctant to ditch them.
Maybe I could look into the cheaper supermarket ones. I did have a good scout around in Holland and Barrett and could only find the pregnecare ones.
Anabelle4 do you know anymore about where you read about pregnecare increases cycle length? (I don't want that Confused)

I didn't take anything while ttc. When I was pregnant I was given sure start vitamins, they were awful but I took them for the whole 9 months. That's all I took..

Folic acid and vitamin d are recommended in pregnancy. Think folic acid is supposed to be started 3 months before ttc

LisaSimpsonsbff · 09/08/2017 20:30

Are you sure there's enough folic acid in your vitamins? The recommended dose for TTC/pregnancy is higher than the usual recommended dose for everyone else. It really is worth being sure about that one - I know someone who didn't bother taking folic acid before TTC because she 'didn't think it would happen so fast' Hmm and she has a lot of guilt about having a baby with spina bifida.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 09/08/2017 20:31

(which guilt may be misplaced by the way - not all spina bifida is due to insufficient folic acid - but obviously it's best to avoid that worry!)

Alpinebetony9911 · 09/08/2017 20:54

It has 400 whatever the funny unit is... is that enough? Hmm

It looks like it has the same amount as the pregnacare ones and just a single folic acid supplement, so should be ok?!

Hi could anyone advise me is it okay to take folic acid and Clomid together??

Magpie24 · 09/08/2017 21:28

So I've stopped my usual multivitamin and am now taking just folic acid (400ug) and vitamin D (Boots own brand). On cycle 4 TTC.

I would like to start taking a general multivitamin that doesn't contain vitamin A or retinol as I know these should be avoided but I can't really find one other than expensive pregnancy supplements.

I'm a vegetarian so like the general multivitamin to support iron and b vitamins.

If anyone finds a decent option do let me know!

HolyShmoly · 09/08/2017 22:14

I take these: www.boots.com/boots-complete-woman-30-tablets-10169491 but based on this discussion I might take an additional folic acid.
I'm planning on stopping this once I hit ovulation as it contains evening primrose oil and instead I'll just take folic acid and vitamin d.

Thissameearth · 09/08/2017 22:24

I don't think you need to worry. Folic acid is the main thing to take in advance but nhs also recommend vitamin d (as others have mentioned) and vitamin c supplements throughout pregnancy. So I think I took pregnacare conception (had no lengthening impact on my cycle!) then once positive I took a combined boots folic acid and vit d and then a separate chewy vit c (for some reason couldn't get one which had all 3 but ONLY those 3). Then went onto pregnacare original when that ran out as easier to just take one pill (and my diet was a bit shit as I felt sick plus I got Pregnacare freebies in a Bounty packs and a mothercare goody bag). Good luck

physicskate · 09/08/2017 22:41

holz - of course!!!!!

MouseLove · 10/08/2017 10:26

I take folic acid and vitamin d as recommended by the NHS. However I'm going to be starting to take vitamin c as I have a suspected luteal phase defect. You generally don't need a multivitamin if you're eating a balanced diet.

I have been taking the Wilkos 'Pregnancy Care' supplements for the past 6 weeks and haven't had problems. Though they do make me feel nauseous if I don't take them with / after food. About £1.70 for 30 days
