Travel to zika high risk countries

Hi,

I'm so torn and don't know what's the right thing to do.

We had a miscarriage with our first pregnancy, so both are very sad and we booked a holiday to the Caribbean to cheer ourselves up with the intention to come back and TTC straight away.

I only realised how zika is still a problem and the countries we are going to are classified as high risk.

I don't know what's the right thing to do, we have 3 options

  1. Cancel the trip, or reroute to somewhere else even though Caribbean has always been a dream and just want to get it out of the system before TTC.
  2. Go on the trip, come back wait for 3 weeks and do the Zika diagnose test for both of us to confirm negative then TTC straight away. If positive then hold off 6 months (as per the advice by the government and healthcare bodies).
  3. Go and then wait for 6 months and don't do test. Reason being I heard the test isn't 100% definitive.

Anyone have been through similar situation or have been to zika high risk just before TTC and what are your thoughts?

We was trying for a while, sadly pregnancy didn't end well. We went to a zika country for a holiday, as we had still not managed to get pregnant again.

We decided not to try until 6 months later, to be safe.
Surprisingly, we fell pregnant 8 weeks later despite being careful Blush

The midwives have said they won't be able to tell until the 20 week scan, it's a long time to be worried - especially as it's taken us so long to get to this point. Therefore, I wouldn't risk it. There's loads of places you can travel too that have no risk.

Did you consider the private zika test? To give you some peace of mind?

I'm so sorry about your pregnancy. Flowers

You could also do 2.) doing everything you can to avoid being bitten. Take B vitamin supplements before, use DEET containing repellents, cover up in light loose clothing etc.

If you are desperate to start TTC again asap though I think I'd look at changing destinations and saving the Caribbean for when you gave a baby (if you only have one they are very portable!) Have you been to Mauritius?

We did, but because it had been 12 weeks since we was there and finding out I read it wouldn't be accurate.

I've been quite shocked by the lack of concern from the midwives etc, but I guess that's my own fault for getting in this predicament in the first place.

Either don't go, or don't get pregnant. No brainer.

My advice is do what's best do you.

We were TTC with not much knowledge of the Zika virus and had booked the Caribbean. I fell pregnant a two weeks before going and we called and got a full refund (only because I was pregnant and it's advised not to fly there at all).

We went to somewhere much closer instead which was lovely. We've always wanted to go to the Caribbean too but plan on going and taking bubs with us when he is walking/toddling Smile

Whatever you do, do what feels right. You're already being sensible by saying that if you do go you will et tested after. Be aware that you will have to pay for these privately it is not on the NHS yet unfortunately.

It, you decide to go, and in the very I likely event that either of you get it (not every mosquito is a carrier) then wait the six months but find a positive in it. Use that six months to get as fit and healthy as possible and save as much money as you can.

It all depends on your mindset of how much you want a baby and how fast. For us as first timers and my OH being a little bit older than me, we were desperate to try and it took us a long while to actually conceive which is always very heartbreaking and frustrating when it's something you want so badly. Just anticipate that you won't get pregnant at the drop of a hat (ok, some people do!) however it can take a healthy couple up to 12 months to conceive natually as the ladies on here will tell you, it drives you crazy symptom spotting, peeing on a stick and being depressed every time your period shows up! So just take all that into account, weigh up the pros and cons together and come to a decision based on what you both feel is right for you in this time Smile

So sorry to hear about your miscarriage leeloy88. Hope you're doing OK. Flowers

I had a holiday to Cuba booked with DH in January '18. (his mother passed away earlier this year so it was going to be in her memory as it was somewhere she'd always wanted to go). The plan was to TTC after we returned.

Someone on here pointed out though that we wouldn't be able to TTC for six months after returning because of Zika. We talked about it a lot and eventually decided to cancel the trip. I'm 34 in October so by the time we started trying I'd be almost 35 and I wanted to give myself as much time as possible in case it takes us a while to conceive.

I'm with Jessybear90. Only you know what feels right for you. For us (also first timers), six months was too long too wait. If you cancel, check the Ts&Cs and bear in mind that you'll lose any money you've paid so far, as you're not cancelling due to pregnancy.

Like Gunpowder suggests, Mauritius is worth considering as it's Zika-free. We went on our honeymoon and it's the most beautiful country I've been to! Hawaii is also OK I think? Check www.cdc.gov/zika/geo/index.html for a full list.

If you decide you can wait, and go to the Caribbean, have an amazing time and enjoy being together: just the two of you!
