HSG - how was it?

I have a hospital appointment booked for this and I'm really scared about it. I'm scared it's going to really hurt, especially after Googling

Can any of you who have had it done let me know how you found it to put my mind at ease?

Hey

I had an HSG a few years ago. I was terrified but actually, it really was fine. I didn't find it painful at all, the hospital staff were very kind and 3 months later I was pregnant after ttc for 2 years. They didn't find anything wrong but I'm convinced it helped me to conceive. The worst part for me was lying there with legs in akimbo Blush

Hope it goes well for you. Try not to worry too much x

Thank you so much DT - really very kind of you. I'm pleased to hear it wasn't as bad as bad as you were expecting. I'm not sure why I am working myself up over it.

Wonderful news to hear you conceived soon after. I've read that it can help that way also. Fingers crossed

I didn't find it painful but due to the angle of my cervix I had to be like a contortionist on the narrow little bed! They were very nice, quite concerned to maintain your dignity (which I really don't care about anyway, have had so many medical people looking at my bits already!)
A friend said it was quite painful but one of her tubes was blocked.

I would say go for it, it might even have the same effect as it did for DT!

I let a student do mine....I don't recommend that!

But generally it was fine, my cervix is a shy little thing so during both HSG and IUI it took a wee while to get things in place! I had a little bit of cramping afterwards but I took some paracetamol and was fine!

Mine was painful, and in hindsight I wish I'd taken something stronger than Paracetemol before. If you are worried, my advice would be to take a couple of Paramol an hour before.

The pain was like bad period pain, except I wasn't allowed to move or clutch my belly like I would normally. I had to lie perfectly flat and still and grit my teeth. Also my womb was twisted slightly so I had to endure it for longer than normal whilst he tried to get the dye down one of my tubes.

Mine was a bad case scenario though, and the staff were wonderful despite this. I know quite a few people who have had it and sailed through, no problems.

But yeah, my advice is to take some strong pain killers before just incase. You'll be absolutely fine and make sure your DH or OH treats you afterwards, it's not nice having you vagina poked pain or no pain.

Shynapple · 23/07/2017 22:16

Thank you for the advice about taking stronger painkillers. It needs to be done, I've been ttc for a very long time. Really appreciate all the feedback. I was wondering if I should take the next day off work also. I think I will.

My hospital letter says it will take half an hour - is that the same experience everyone else had? Will there be bleeding afterwards?

Hi- I had it last month, I took two ibuorofen before it and I was fortunate to have no pain at all. My tubes were clear so that is probably why, I understand it may hurt if there is a blockage or if there is difficulty with locating the cervix. It was pretty quick - 30 minutes sounds fair and would even allow a few minutes waiting I reckon.

After I had a very very small amount of bleeding, and I ovulated two days later that cycle. My period was incredibly painful with very bad cramps compared to normal that cycle too and I found my period (sorry TMI alert) to be much darker brown so I did feel like it was a clear out!

All in all it was fine, the painful period surprised me but also made me think at least it's done something and good to rule out a tube issue!

Hope all goes well for yours x

Hi OP, I had spotting afterwards. The hospital had said it would take 20 minutes but it was more like 35 (I think because of my anatomy).
I had to get dressed and stay for 10 minutes after, they offered tea and a sanitary towel! I had brought some in my bag. Then I went back to work. Depending on how flexible your work are with last minute leave you could play it by ear. A colleague took 2 days sick leave for hers but I haven't told people in work I'm TTC.
Sorry your experience was not so good Sk1pper.

They advised me to take 2 naproxen or ibuprofen the night before and two pills two hours before. It went fine, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I had some period like cramps towards the end but really not very bad. My period is worse.
