Hoping to learn a bit about luteal phases- hunting a bfp with a 42 day cycle!

Afternoon,

I've been lurking on the conception board for longer than I care to admit. Following your highs and lows and wishing everyone the best of luck.

I'm 26, ttc #1 and have had a year of tests following a stop in periods last year for 9 months.

My cycle returned In the new year and seems to have settled in to a 42 day pattern, of which I'm now on day 28 with no positive opk.

I'm temping but fairly new to it so still getting to grips with fertility friend, using clear blue digital dual hormone and now getting flashing smiles.

My concern now is, am I likely to conceive this month if I have a shorter than ideal luteal phase, given I've not yet ovulated?

My tests have included a trans vaginal to rule out pcos and blood tests to check hormone levels which are apparently normal.

Any wisdom on getting to know when I might be ovulating greatly appreciated!

If this month doesn't work out, I shall see anyone else with a ticket for the August bus :-)

Anything over 10 days is supposed to be okay. Anything less and it might be hard for an egg to properly implant before your progesterone drops and your period starts. Carry on testing to see when you ovulate and if you find your luteal phase is on the short side you could drop vitamin b6 to see if that helps to extend it. I know there seems to be a lot of success stories from it! Good luck Smile

Thank you very much for your reply. I shall carry on.. flashing smiles are better than blank faces!

From your info there it looks like I've got a couple more days to ovulate without concern. However I've duly noted the b6 suggestion.

Many thanks... goes off to check out home pharmacy meds cupboard.

My luteal phase was usually 12-13 days. Hopefully you'll ovulate very soon.

Your luteal phase isn't changed by late or early ovulation. So you could ovulated on day 9 or day 49 and the length of your luteal phase will still be the same. Mine is 11 days which is shorter than ideal but hoping it's still enough!

passmethewine that's new information to me! So have I got it wrong, I thought your follicular phase was pre ovulation and luteal after Blush.... clearly have a lot to learn!

I have another appointment on Thursday and expect another round of bloods which will reveal what I'm tying myself up in knots trying to work out anyway. However I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to get as much reassurance as possible.

Very frustrating having what appear to be (annoying long) cycles but with no confirmation of ovulating.

Thanks so much for the words of wisdom.

You have got that right, follicular is pre OV and luteal is post OV - what I was trying to say was that whilst your follicular phase can vary greatly, your luteal phase will always be the same (might vary by a day or two but generally never more than that). So if your luteal phase is usually 12 days say, if you ovulate early or late you will still always have roughly 12 days after ovulation before period.

Ah I see, sorry, this caffeine free morning lark is clearly getting to me.

Thank you for confirming I'm not completely ignorant, so much new stuff to understand. There I was as a teenager thinking if a boy sat too close to me in history I'd be pregnant. Grin

Hi @Sundaylunchhappy sounds like you have similar cycles to me. Highly frustrating and all a bit worrying! Hope you get some answers soon.

There's a thread on here that I started called "long cycles / short luteal phase". There's a few of us in the same boat over there if you wanted to have a nosey at what we've been discussing Smile

Sundaylunchhappy · 12/07/2017 07:10

Hi Bows, thanks very much I will do! It would be great to discuss with others in the same boat. It feels like a horrid limbo between not being diagnosed with fertility problems and therefore feeling awful for ranting on when others are in worse situations, but also feeling really isolated and upset that I can't seem to get to grips with my own body!
