17 weeks twins waters gone

Can any one help
My friend is currently 17 weeks pregnant with twins
Twin 1s waters have broken but twin 2 still has its waters

Forgive me for sounding stupid but rather than ask her loads of questions while she's going through this experience can any one please tell me if a baby can survive at 17 weeks with no water and if twin 1 does pass away will that mean she loses twin 2?

I'm so upset for her
I've currently found out I'm pregnant myself and this has scared me so much more so because I don't really understand what could happen with it being a twin pregnancy

Thanks in advance X

Twin 1 is likely to die. What that means for twin 2 is complicated and difficult to answer without being an obstetrician and probably difficult to answer even then without the passage of time. Flowers to your friend

She should be on the phone to Maternity Triage NOW to get the advice she needs! She will probably need to go to hospital.

kayleigh612 · 05/07/2017 22:05

She's currently in hospital has been since last night
But she hasn't really been given answers and I hate to ask about it all when its so hard for her
But I'd like to understand it better to be able to be the friend she needs I suppose

If twin 1 dies will she have to be put into labour to give birth to twin 1? How can she carry on with the pregnancy with twin 2 now
I feel so stupid for asking these things

Hi, having been through preterm rupture of membranes three times, they really can't predict what will happen next. It's a watch and wait game.
Yes it is extremely complicated and extremely risky but there are also possibilities.
Both twins could survive until 24 weeks and then are born, or one might die and trigger labour, or there might be another reason the waters went and everything could end very sadly.
The waters can refill partly or completely, then leak again, or one baby can survive in low water long.enough for the other to get big enough...
Unfortunately she will just have to wait and see and take a day at a time.
Different docs give different advice and she might be asked to make some difficult decisions from the heart.
Be kind and try not to question events. I found it extremely upsetting when people asked me why did it happen, or said I shouldn't have worked so much etc.
I have had some.happy endings and some unhappy endings in my three experiences. Either way, this is the start of the journey.

Waters went because she coughed and the doctor has said twin ones lungs weren't developing properly

Fingers crossed everything goes well she's carrying there first boy out of 6 girls
One of each she's pregnant With now so all that much more heart breaking for her

Assuming they are dcda twins which it sounds like they are, it is possible that even if she does sadly lose twin 1 to carry twin 2 to term.

lemureyes · 06/07/2017 10:41

Best thing to do is be there for her and try to remain positive.
The problem with hospitals is they can be quite negative (my parents know this all to well 😢)

Is it really much more heartbreaking because one is a boy? It's pretty devastating to lose a baby regardless of it's sex. Please don't say that to her.

kayleigh612 · 06/07/2017 11:42

No that's how she feels Hun
She's miscarried 3 boys before she's having a hard time

The update is
Twin 1 has no water but is alive
Twin 2 has water and is a alive
Cervix is now closed

And it's a waiting game :(

Good luck babies xxxxx

Oysterbabe · 06/07/2017 20:30

Not twins but I shared a room in hospital with a woman whose waters broke at 19 weeks and she managed to continue to carry her baby until 27 weeks. I have everything crossed for her.

Justhadmyhaircut · 06/07/2017 20:33

Hoping there is a happy ending for your friend. . Flowers

PurpleTraitor · 06/07/2017 20:33

My waters broke at 18 weeks, single baby, died within 48 hours, but not entirely sure when. I had labour induced, spent around nine hours in hospital then went home, no reason was ever found. I hope it is good news for your friend.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 06/07/2017 20:37

I too shared a hospital bay with a lady whose waters broke at 18 weeks and she was still there- babies still alive and well- almost ten weeks later. Fingers crossed for your friend.

kayleigh612 · 06/07/2017 22:10

Forgive me for being stupid I'm not very good with things like this

But if twin 1 has no waters can it survive at all?
