Zika and waiting to TTC

My OH and I are going on holiday to Florida which I just realised is a "moderate" Zika risk. I am also a mosquito magnet. Howver, I'm confused about advice and think, after researching, we should put TTCing back by six months when we get back (better to be safe than sorry).

OH thinks I am being over cautious and my doctor just googled it when I asked for advice and told me to do what I think is best.

Just wondering if anyone else has put back TTCing because of Zika?

Thank you!

6 months is the official guideline. You can pay for a test though I think.

Yes, my friends went travelling and have held back ttc too.

Its obviously a personal choice, the risks around transmission are still poorly understood - so noone is going to be able to give a clear answer.

There are many other risks when it comes to a healthy pregnancy, it may be your age risk outweighs zika risk.

Sorry i dont have anything more reassuring, do you have to holiday in florida?

I'm worried about this too. We may change honeymoon plans. I think some parts of America, like NY, all cases have been from people who have been to areas with Zika and it's not supposed to actually be in NY? I haven't looked that far into it, but I know Florida was a no go.

Apparently some tests have showed it in a male's sperm after 6 months too.

Our friends went to Mexico and her DH had a test when they came back - you have to do it pretty quickly after so the antibodies are detectable. It meant they could TTC after 8 weeks instead of 6m (that's the risk period for women). She's 37 and didn't want to wait any longer. The test did cost a couple of hundred quid though I believe.

We changed destination from Cuba to Lanzarote because of the risk

SilverLilly · 02/07/2017 12:24

My doctor advised waiting 6 months. We could have paid privately for tests but decided we were fine waiting.

Unfortunately the holiday's been booked for a long time so can't really change it. I am 34, nearly 35 and was hoping to have another child after this planned one, so didn't really want to leave it too much longer (especially as I've been having a few issues with my cycle anyway).

But, obviously it's not worth the risk, so it looks like we'll be waiting six months. I don't think we're going to have access to any private tests due to our location (we do not live on the UK mainland). Thank goodness I realised in time about this, otherwise we were planning on starting to TTC whilst we were away!

Which area of Florida are you travelling too? We went to Disney world in Feb, found out I was pregnant mid may Blush

Obviously we had stopped trying and was going to wait the 6 months. From looking online zika is only currently active in certain areas, obviously they fly so can spread to other areas but the risks are lower.

You can pay for tests on return if you do not wish to wait.

No advice OP other than to share your frustration. We went to the Maldives in May, which is a risk area, and thankfully got v few bites (just one each in fact) but are holding off TTC until the end of the year.

I kinda wish we'd had the test now because I just want to get on with it. It feels the chances are very slim but we just don't want to risk it.

Jessybear90 · 06/07/2017 19:50

I was due to go to Jamaica but cancelled and got our flight re-routed. Not worth the risk at all. But if you can wait the 6 months to TTC then why cancel?
