PG four weeks after miscarriage - it hardly seems possible??

Hi all,

I started to miscarry at 7wks pregnant on 19th February. I went to the nurse who did a test and confirmed my hcg levels had returned to normal by 2nd March.

I began eperiencing some faint pregnancy symptoms around 12 March and did a test yesterday (18th March). It was positive!

It hardly seems possible that I can fall pregnant again so quickly - I seem to be in my fourth week of pregnancy already. My cycle must have kicked in as soon as I saw blood, which is unusual seeing I was still showing up as pg until 22 Feb!! I phone the nurse today (who was incidentally too busy to speak to me and spoke to me through the recpeptionist) and I heard her saying 'is she sure, is she sure??' Has this happened to anyone else?

It's crazy but I'm

lissielou · 19/03/2007 15:06

wow, did you def get a bfn? did you have a scan?

Spaceman · 19/03/2007 15:20

I got a BFP, but admitedly it took thirty seconds or so to show up. It was a Boots test.

I only took the test because I was having so many symptoms last week such as fizzy boobs, dizziness, going to the toilet in the night and tiredness.

Nurse told me to call again in two weeks time for a scan. I don't know if it's the same everywhere but I can't get good support come hell or high water where I live. I phoned the midwife and she's on leave again. When I miscarried last month I had to leave a message at reception to let her know that things had come to an end and she's never even contacted me to see if I'm alright.

where are you spaceman? do you have an EPU coz you need to get a blood test done asap and a scan booked just to be on the safe side!

MadameWeb · 19/03/2007 15:25

after you had your misscarriage ( ) did you get a negative test result?

Spaceman · 19/03/2007 15:34

Hi Lissielou;

I'm in Maidenhead so I phoned Slough (Wexham) hospital. The nurse who spoke to me through the receptionist is in the EPU and didn't seem too bothered about my situ and said to have a scan at six weeks.

Might go to the docs tomorrow.

Hi MadameWeb;

I had a blood test on the 22nd Feb and it showed a very slight trace of hcg(about 50 I think she said). So I had to go back on the 2nd March, when I did a urine test. It showed negative.

lissielou · 19/03/2007 15:35

ooh, in that case it sound as if you are pg again. can you get a docs appt for today or tomorrow?

MadameWeb · 19/03/2007 15:36

oh, i was just thinking maybe it was leftover hcg from your MC,

its sounds very positive and i truely, truely hope all is well!!

((((((((((hugs)))))))))))

tissy · 19/03/2007 15:37

this happened to me

don'think I did a test after the m/c, but it was heavy enough for me to know what had happened.

Got pregnant again next month. Dr was somewhat surprised that I hadn't reported the m/c to him; I didn't know I had to ! Beofre we had these very sensitive tests, it would have been put down as a late period, so just carried on as normal.

fettle · 19/03/2007 15:38

Hi Spaceman,

I?m 12 weeks pg today (have my scan on Friday, so hoping all will be ok), but I had a mc over Christmas, red bleeding started on 20st Dec, stopped by 26th Dec. I had a BFN on the 27th Dec and a then ovulated on 8th Jan, discovered I was pg 21st Jan, which would have been 4.5 weeks after red bleeding of mc started!

Had a scan at 6.5 weeks due to some spotting and saw a heartbeat, so fingers-crossed for this coming Friday.!!

Sorry to hear about your miscarriage, but I think Congratulations! are due now!

If your HCG levels were back to normal, this should be a new pg ? take care of yourself and try to get an early scan, although even after 2 mc, this scan on Friday is the earliest they would offer me (I had to have spotting to have the earlier one at 6 weeks!).

Take care
x

Spaceman · 19/03/2007 15:39

I should go tomorrow I suppose. Now my dates are all over the place aren't they?

Spaceman,

This happened to me. Good luck for this pregnancy! I have a lovely ds.

Spaceman · 19/03/2007 15:44

Blimey Fettle,

It sounds as if you have worse treatment that I do from the NHS in your area. I'm shocked to hear that you had to wait so long for a first scan.

I'm sure everything will be okay now as you've got to the 12 weeks.

Fettle and Tissy; do you feel any different this time? Last time I felt as though something was up from the start but this pg seems to have taken a strong hold and I'm more confident my hcg levels are rising because of the symptoms I'm having.

I'm still shocked that I could get a BFP within four weeks of the very first spatter of blood, though.

Thanks for your input everyone, it's really nice to let it out!!!!

this was 5 yrs ago! Felt sicker second time.

FunMumm · 19/03/2007 15:55

This happened to me as well...
Congratulations...

Spaceman · 19/03/2007 16:08

It's nice to hear I'm not having a phantom pregnancy. We've been TTC since September and it's just been an uphill struggle. After the miscarriage, I just wanted to put it out of my mind for a bit, so I reckon it does help to take your mind off it and stop obsessing. I got pg immediately with DD1 - the first time without contraception. I wasn't hankering after it then either.

However, of course I'm now completely wrapped up with it all again and can't concentrate on work...

OP posts:
fettle · 19/03/2007 21:47

Hi Spaceman - with my 1st mc last Feb, I kind of felt a bit unsure all through, even though I was sick. I was nowhere near as sick as I was with DD. I had a missed mc at 9 weeks then. Over Christmas, I mc at 5-6 weeks, so really early - but didn't feel pg at all at any time.

This time I have tried really hard not to focus on being pg at all to try and not think or worry too much about it - have felt awful at times, but not as much as I did with DD, which is worrying, but each pg is different I keep getting told! Felt much much more tired at the beginning of this pg, that with either mc, starting to come out of that exhaustion now though!! And my boobs are still big!

Do so hope it all works out for you this time - having babies is really so very hard!

take care
xxx

helenhismadwife · 19/03/2007 22:14

congratulations spaceman!!

I had a miscarriage at 15 weeks october 23rd 2004 followed by erpc I got a positve on 24th November and a darker line on 26th November had to ring up the epu and speak to the midwife there and a consultant to be convinced there couldnt be any hcg hanging round

MrsMcJnr · 19/03/2007 22:26

Spaceman - congratulations! that is my dream at the moment (I started MC 2 weeks ago, I was 10 weeks). I've read that the first day of the MC bleed is CD1 so technically if you OV you could then fall again. For many the resumption of OV seems to take some time. I'm waiting to OV and keeping everything crossed that I'll fall in the first month too! any tips!?

I know what you mean about medical support, I left a message similar to yours and my MW hasn't called me back either - that was a week ago

Spaceman · 20/03/2007 09:12

Thanks everyone for your messages and well wishes.

Having babies is really hard - I was so lucky first time around. Apart from the fact I had to have a c-section as DD was breech, everything else was completely straightforward and I didn't really have any symptoms. I think it made me and DH a bit cocky as we thought it'd be that easy second time around!

This time I feel different though because my boobs hurt which I didn't get during my mc pg. It worried me quite a bit and I took it as being a bad sign (which it was!). I also got faint lines on my pg tests and felt generally quite negative about the whole thing. I was more tired, though, but that could be down to a host of things.

MrsMcJnr; so sorry to hear you're sad news. I hope you're doing okay. I heard a rumour that you are more fertile after being pg; so technically it should be easier for you to get pg in the next couple of months. That's why I thought 'sod it' when the nurse told me to wait a month for timing's sake. I didn't want to waste prescious time. I only know of two other people who have also heard this, so it could be a myth. The only solid advice is to go at it like rabbits I suppose! I conceived at the point you are now in your cycle so have an early night with you DP tonight maybe...???

Fettle: You are going to see a lovely baby swimming around in your tum on Friday! I just know it. Please let us know how it goes - I'll be thinking of ya!

helenhismadwife: Congratulations on your pg! You must be thrilled

Blimey Muminfife! You are the winner. How did you know you were pg? Did you get a BFP on a test or did you know because you had symptoms? Really that means you ovulated pretty much as soon as you body decided to mc I suppose. What did your doctor say?

The nurse said to me that there is no medical reason not to TCC the month after a mc, but they like you to wait for one cycle so you know your dates. I thought I'd just get on with it, try and resume a normal sex life and let nature take it's course.

I'm so pleased to hear you're a safe and sound 28wks now. You must have gone through hell with 4 x mc's. xx

(helenhismadwife; sorry for the confusion. I also have DD of 2.6 and she's a right handful - sweet of course, but takes over the house!!! Can't be putting me off, though, because here I am praying for another one in November!x)

Sorry about the blip! I should take more time when reading things...

I too felt physically on top of the world after my mc. I had loads of energy, so when people asked me 'how are you?' I had to be honest and say 'physically I feel great, but emotionally I'm shocked and disappointed'.
That summed it up for me really. I was quite greatful that I did feel so well as it helped me spring back pretty quickly. Although I still get a bit teary when I think of my DH's birthday this year. We had confirmation of the mc on that day as I had been to get scanned in the morning. Nice present for him huh? The mood in the house was a bit of a roller coaster, but we all pulled together as a family and had a little party with just the three of us. That's the one memory that still chokes me up a bit and I know it still only happened last month but I think it's one that will stay with me for a while.

Anyway, onward and upward. I decided to be completely postitive about this pg and not worry one bit about anything going wrong. I have to expect everything will be a okay!! I feel a lot more positive (although I'm only four and a bit weeks grrr)
