Conception and Life in general - How important is it to eat fish??

How important is it to eat fish when ttc and in general? How often? What kinds of fish? and most importantly, why??

I am ashamed that at the age of 28 I don't know why fish is so crucial, and hence I don't know what type of fish I should be eating??

I have bought cod for tonight's tea... going to make fishfingers (from scratch ) - but is it even the right type of fish.

Ok... I am waffling here... probably because I am not eating enough fish and my brain is turning to mush.

Am sure someone will come along with more knowledge than me but since the new year, we have endeavoured to eat a fish once a week for dinner and then we should have at least one lunch of fish.

Its to do with fish oils which are good for you.

Do find fish a bit of a p ain to cook though. Last night we had food doctor steam things from Ocado/waitrose which had seeds in as well so were doubly good . V east to cook too !

oily fish (mackerel, salmon, anchovies, sardines etc) is good because it's high in omega 3. Unfortunately fish can also have high build ups of heavy metals so you shouldn't eat too much of it. farmed salmon has less omega 3 than wild salmon because of the diet it is fed

However, omega 3's can be found in a lot of other things. organic milk has higher levels of it than normal milk, it can be found in lots of different nuts too.
Flaxseed (linseed) is a great source of omega 3 and can be used in baking and all sorts (or just eaten on its own)

Thanks very much ladies!! How typical that I don't like ANY of the oily fish!! and I gag and the sight and smell of ALL shellfish But it's really important that I find ways of getting the oils!!

Wheelybug Thanks for the link, shame I only liked the white non oily fish

Lottie Don't panic The only cod I will ever buy is the sustainable shetland cod. But it seems that I am wasting my time with it, since it isn't oily! At £19.99 a kg, it's not a cheap waste... but I am very keen on ethical food. That wiki link was really good, ta. The part about the low birth weight was particularly interesting! It seems that organic eggs and cheese have omega oils, which is good because I eat cheese at least once a week.

Hairymclary Can I use flaxseed oil in my cooking where I would usually use olive oil?? Such as in stir-frys etc? I do drink organic milk, but only skimmed... does that make a difference, since we are talking about the fat?

I like eating fish and seafood but hate the endless queues at the fish counter after work. We eat lots of sushi. There are some types of fish you need to avoid if pregnant.

I take MumOmega3 and Flax seed oil supplements as I suspect I'm not getting enough.

I find if I've been eating out lots or have a sluggish metabolism fish is great for a nice healthly light meal. It doesn't have to be really fishy as well you can get lots of yummy sauces to go with it. Or try fish curry, but at the sauce at the end or it breaks up.

I think in general its good to mix about the type of food you have to get a varied diet and everyone has different tastes so you shouldn't force yourself on different food groups if you don't like them

Good job I asked about the flax oil Lottie... how 'fick' am I!?!

Cityangel, your recipe looks tasty, wonder if I could omit the shellfish ???

My cod goujons (sounds fancier than fishfingers, no?) were scrummy, shame they weren't a health benefit. Oh well. Perhaps I should look into that mum omega stuff??

The MumOmega stuff is good but you need a bloody re-mortgage its quite pricey!

Yeah leave out the shllfish its basically like pasta bake but with fish

Ready · 15/03/2007 18:39

How pricey?? Are we talking, forgo the shoes for some omega oils?

I don't eat any fish at all - never have and the smell makes me puke. I am the black sheep of the family as my gran and mum ate fish like cats!

I take Boots own fish oil tablets every day with my Wellwoman pill. When I was pregnant the MW suggested I take the pregnancy vits with added fishoils but did warn them that they were more expensive than normal ones.

cedar12 · 15/03/2007 19:11

Ready a good way to get omega 3 is linseed as someone said earlier.
I bought some from the health food shop which were nice, sweetened with fruit I think. I spinkle some on my daughter breakfast cereal and she loves it and put it in flap jacks etc. After reading this thread I think I shall be spinkling it on mine as well.

Ready · 15/03/2007 19:47

Glad I am not the only one that gags at the smell of fish!

OOooh linseed... will check that out next time I am in town, thanks. Oh, and would lurve the recipe for your flapjacks - don't hold out on me now Cedar - we're in it together with food, you and me (and Roskva!)

The best recipe for flapflack I have found is in a Nigella cook. I just add some linseed instead of the oats never really measure it out maybe a small handful.
450g oats
75g brown sugar
300g butter or marg I found butter a bit rich
50g golden syrup
23cm tin
190 c gas 5 for 20-25mins
Mix sugar and oats. melt butter and syrup mix it all together and stick it in the tin.
Readt I slipping sausages and mash for tea! they are taste the difference ones though and I promise i wont eat to many.
