I've been taking contriception tablets for 8 days and I'm 3 days late on my period does this mean there's a chance I'm pregnant ?

Oh dear. Sounds like your doc didn't explain how they work...

OK. So they are not effective as contraception for the first week. They prevent ovulation (which is when the egg is available for being fertilised) and/or change conditions in the uterus so that sperm cannot travel to the egg or so that the egg cannot implant.

Basically, yes you could be pregnant if you ovulated a week or more ago and had sex around the same time.

The pill will change when you have periods (which technically aren't periods but 'withdrawal bleeds'). Even so, it is probably worth you taking a pregnancy test, as that will be the only way for you to find out!

Did you follow the doctors guidelines e.g. Not have sex for seven days without another form of contraception? Very much doubt it as the bleed you get from a pill, presuming you are on the combined pill, isn't a true period. If in doubt take a test x

You are supposed to start the pill on the first day of your period or you will have to use an additional barrier method (condoms) for the first 7 days while taking it for it to be effective. If you didn't start on the day of your period chances are it will also delay your next period.
Did you have pregnancy ruled out before you started it?
