Can I get pregnant?

I'm nearly 7 weeka postpartum!
I'm totally breastfeeding can I still get pregnant again? Probably sound silly lol

I have been reading on line that's you can't? As your body don't release eggs! I haven't had a period yet

Why are you asking? Are you worried you're pregnant?

Breastfeeding isn't a reliable contraceptive so if you don't want to get pregnant again you need to make sure you're protected.

You're only 'safe' for 3 weeks after delivery. Breastfeeding is no guarantee that you aren't producing eggs (though it makes it less likely) - my grandmother can tell you all about it; she has two children less than a year apart and was breastfeeding. You release an egg before you have a period - and you only need one egg to make a baby. If you're having sex, you need to take a pregnancy test and start using contraceptives (assuming you don't want another baby just yet).

Yes you can. Healthcare professionals fill me with rage when they say this, I saw a nurse for my 6 week check and she said as long as im breastfeeding every 2-3 hours im covered. Its not true, I know of 2 people who fell for this and have dc less than 1 year apart.

I've seen a fair few 'but I'm breastfeeding - how can I be pregnant?' threads on here. You can most definitely become pregnant whilst breastfeeding! Like pp, you can also ask my grandmother!

No doctor will tell you you can't get pregnant while breastfeeding. How hard is it to use condoms? Confused

Sorry that didn't come across how I meant it to. I just meant that while there's any chance of getting pregnant while you don't want to be, why take a risk on something you're not sure about?

I'm amazed there are health care professionals spreading this rubbish. I'm medically qualified and haven't come across it with anyone I've worked with.

purpledaisies yes, I couldnt get an app for the contraception for a couple of weeks after my 6 week check, the nurse told me not to worry as long as I was bf every 2-3 hours.

My doctor said the same thing, I will be using something when we start to have sex again, I was just shocked that doctors and the Internet says if your breastfeeding it like 98% if you breastfeeding every few hours and on demand.

98% effective means 2 out of every 100 couples will get pregnant if they're only using breastfeeding as a method of contraception. It's a daft risk to take.

Did the doctor say you should be using another method of contraception even though it wasn't likely you'd get pregnant?

He didn't say I shouldn't but didn't really make it sound like I should, 98% isn't that bad? Isn't most birth control like that? I wouldn't know as I have only used condoms. And the mini pill

98% is pretty good actually when compared with actual use of condoms, the pill etc. but still if you definitely don't want to get pregnant you should take another precaution. I would hate to

98% isn't that bad, but judging from the number of stories i expect it's lower than that. In my case periods didn't return till around 1 if memory serves so it's likely I wasn't fertile until then. I've also seen it mentioned that once you've gone a 6(?) hour stretch without a breastfeed, protection is lost.

98% is comparable to condoms, tge pull is more like 99% but the trouble is, people don't always understand how much they need to feed to not release eggs. You can easily not feed often enough (or your baby doesn't take enough milk), not realise you've ovulated because you've had a period and then have sex and get pregnant.
