Do you eat, drink and be merry in the TWW?

Obviously people eat and drink all sorts of loveliness that isn't so great if you happen to be pregnant. But what do you do if you're still waiting for that elusive BFP? If you're in the midst of purgatory TWW, are you abstaining or are you carrying on as normal?

My husband really does not want to add any extra stress or pressure to ttc so he wants us to carry on as normal.

I had this dilemma so it was one of the questions I asked the fertility specialist when we went for our tests. She said carry on as normal - her advice was to drink like a European, but don't binge like a Brit ha ha. So that's what we've been doing! TTC is stressful enough!

Grinwhat a fab motto! I'll certainly take that on board!

I'm certainly more conscious in the TWW and will offer to be the designated driver more but I still have the odd glass of wine and last cycle I went to a spa with saunas and hot tubs. I'm also making the most of being able to eat soft cheeses - the one thing I know I will miss! So I guess I'm cautious but not too restrictive.

I carry on as normal...it could take years to conceive or it might never happen at all and I don't want to put my life on hold.
I do take other measures such as taking folic acid, wearing gloves to change the cat litter etc but the GP advised me to feel free to drink wine!

I recently went on a course around alcohol in pregnancy.....for the absolute best chance of conception-abstain both of you !! However it won't harm the embryo in these very early stages, if it doesn't matter to much have a few, if it's a "precious" pregnancy eg IVF or other fertility problems then probably best not to. Go for it with cheese and chocolate though

LisaSimpsonsbff · 20/12/2016 08:14

I know alcohol can affect fertility, but presumably that's a constant/general health thing - surely by the 2ww the die is cast in that regard?

It is hard, isn't it? It's been about four months of trying for us, which I know is still very early days, but I am starting to think 'what if I'm doing something wrong?' and think 'maybe if I had given up drinking/all caffeine/sugar/etc....'. On the other hand, the longer it goes on the more you're glad you've tried to keep things 'normal', since TTC is all consuming enough! I might feel a bit guilty, but I imagine if I'd last had a drink/proper coffee in August and still had no BFP I'd be feeling all the worse!

Sorry for long post! Bottom line: I will also (hopefully - waiting on ov any day now) be in 2ww over Christmas and I will be drinking and indulging more or less as usual, but I might feel bad about it!

No alcohol will make implantation of a fertilised egg less likely to be sucessful

LisaSimpsonsbff · 20/12/2016 08:29

By what mechanism? Obviously it can't do anything to the fertilised egg itself, so does it affect the uterine lining? I'm genuinely interested, by the way, not doubting you!

Bubbinsmakesthree · 20/12/2016 08:35

I drank very little in the TWW for months and months. Obviously the month I thought 'fuck it' and got trashed on cocktails was the month of the BFP!

Second time around I waited until I had a BFP before I made any lifestyle changes.

Stillwishihadabs · 20/12/2016 09:26

Yes exactly that, makes the lining less responsive.

Spam88 · 20/12/2016 20:40

I didn't drink during the TWW and also tried to follow all the pregnancy food rules (good practice because I made lots of mistakes). Also gave up caffeine before TTC - would have been awful dealing with the double whammy of early pregnancy symptoms and caffeine withdrawal.

Absolutely made up for the lack of drinking while I was on my period though.

It's more difficult at this time of year though... I've been eyeing up a mini bottle of bubbles in the fridge this evening Xmas Grin

Alcohol has never stopped me getting pregnant though, my longest pregnancy involved a wine tasting menu a week before and a massive hangover as I was convinced I was out for the month... my shortest I hadn't even sniffed a glass of wine - but as a rule I avoid it completely because of now having had the heartache of multiple miscarriages.

I've googled it loads Smile and the general rule is most people don't have a clue they are pregnant so it's ok to have a glass and unless you have a line (or worried about implantation) then the actual baby won't be harmed.

Am bloody tempted this evening this TWW is killing me! Earliest I can test is Christmas Eve... I won't drink the bubbles but I'm so tempted

I think drinking to excess or binge drinking is a no. I remember giving up completely when I found out I was pregnant with ds1. I was pretty good and drank non alcoholic beer to quench my beer craving... Yes beer craving!! Im sure you'll be fine with a couple over festive period. I'm having the odd one here and there and I was due af yesterday with bfn...
