Trimethoprim- 4 days late

Hi,

First ever post! Has anyone experienced their period being delayed by taking Trimethoprim (antibiotic prescribed for UTIs). My period is 4 days late which is very unusual. I finished my course of Trimethoprim on Sunday. Due to my husband working away I only had sex a few times this month and the first time was 2 weeks ago today so if I was pregnant it would only be very early stages. I've done a couple of cheap Lloyds pharmacy tests and a Clear Blue digital and all 3 were negative. Not sure whether to give up hope for this month?!

Yes antibiotics can mess up anything to do with regular body functions. I hope you get an answer soon. X

Thank you, feeling a bit down in the dumps about it as had my period been on time I would have been fertile this month the whole time my husband is home so the longer it's delayed the less chance we have this month either 😁

I have a long history with utis Sad and trimethoprim always messed up my periods.

Just as an aside I would let your GP know you're ttc if you need it again, I was once told that it shouldn't be used in early pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, and, if it is, to take a higher amount of folic acid which the GP prescribes.

Good luck

Yes please let your GP know. You ideally shouldn't be taking antibiotics if you're TTC. Wait a month to be sure it's out your system too.

I told her but she didn't seem bothered really, while she was testing the urine I asked for a pregnancy test and she said 'no, just do one at home'😂

I know this thread is very old but I just wanted to mention that your doctor was wrong - trimethoprim can actually be very dangerous in early pregnancy, and also in the 3 months prior to conception. I know this because I was prescribed it for a UTI just after ovulation and my doctor specifically told me it was fine. My period is now late (with a BFP) and so i quickly googled it and literally every single article comes up warning about the increased risk of neural tube defects, heart defects, limb defects etc. One study said it DOUBLED the chances of these defects. It also increases the risk of miscarriage by 2-3 times. I asked a different doctor about this and she confirmed that my research was correct - I should not have been given this drug (only as a very last resort). In Australia it is a Category B3 drug. I am now facing the decision of whether to keep the baby and hope it’s all fine, or to abort before we get too far along. I hope all turned out fine for you, but I want others to be aware of the risks of this drug, to not blindly trust your doctor (which is so sad that we can’t...) and to always do your own research before taking a drug at any point in the TTC journey xx

hi just seen your post i was wondering if it did have any affect on your pregnancy? I have just found out I am pregnant around 3 weeks I believe, I had a 3 day course of trimethoprim a week after conception and now I am in a panic after reading all the research around trimethoprim in early pregnancy. It wasn't planned it was a suprise so I haven't been taking any folic acid supplements before hand or whilst on the antibiotics..

Just to add to this if anyone ever comes across this thread in the future, I took trimethoprim just before i got pregnant with my 2nd baby and it turned out absolutely fine, and is a very healthy 6 year old.
