Is it worth having a laparoscopy?

I'm 30 nearly 31 and terrified I have endometriosis.
I always have gas, constantly all day long.
I went through stages of constipation etc.
I have been told it's ibs as I do suffer with anxiety and have previously had medication for that.
Sometimes it feels like I need a wee all day but that feeling eases if I pass gas.

I've been reading endo symptoms.
Convinced myself I have it.
My periods are regular 28/29 days.
I have a little cramp but not too bad,I have no pelvic pain and I don't bleed during the month.
I have no pain with sex or anything.
Is it worth putting myself through a laparoscopy?
What would you do?

Have you been advised to have one by the doctor/consultant at fertility clinic? In my experience they will do a pelvic exam then ultrasound first to check for cysts but a lap is the only definitive way to diagnose/treat endo.

If you're struggling to conceive and you have endo signs then I would go for it if your doctor has suggested it.

I had one, it was fine although I didn't have any endo so can't comment on recovery after treatment of that.

Only been trying 1 month to get pregnant.
Doctor was pretty dismissive.
Felt my tummy etc and said it felt fine.
It's only really the gas and constipation but not sure if that is ibs.

I was thinking of paying privately.
Doubt the doctor would do any tests after a month especially if I say I have no pain etc

Why not wait and see if you conceive? Your symptoms sound more like ibs than endo, although some people have no symptoms of endo others have agonising abdominal/pelvic pain and periods that are crippling. If you've been trying a month I'd consider at the very least waiting 6 months to a year depending on your age before thinking about paying out privately for an op that may show nothing!

Piehunter · 04/12/2016 17:12

Gah, I see your age now. Definitely doesn't seem worth rushing to get a diagnostic lap done and I'm not sure anyone would in their right mind, not just thinking of the money..

Endometriosis doesn't always affect fertility - I have endo and became pregnant straight away every time we've tried.

None of the symptoms you've mentioned would trigger a referral to gynaecology. That doesn't mean that you don't have endometriosis - my symptoms didn't get me referred and if it wasn't for a cyst that was spotted on an ultrasound I might still be none the wiser!

Also having a laparoscopy done won't necessarily get you a diagnosis of endo even if you do have it! Lots of sufferers have been through several laparoscopies before finally being diagnosed by a specialist who actually knows what they're looking for!

It sounds from your post like you are anxious about getting pregnant, which is completely understandable, but it is too soon to be worrying and looking into reasons why it hasn't happened for you yet. Getting pregnant can take quite a while even when there are no issues.

Have you posted about this before? Because I remember seeing the same post and thinking it sounds like you have IBS. I wouldn't worry until you've been TTC for around a year. X

ringaling · 04/12/2016 17:38

Yeah mouse I have
I'm such a worrier

I have endo and my periods are hellish. Before dc's I would throw up each month with the pain. That for me was pretty much the only symptom of endo that I had, but I did diagnose myself and then went to a specialist and a lap confirmed it.
From your symptoms I would think IBS - can you try to do whatever it takes to get possible IBS under control and then see whether you're still having problems? Maybe keep a diary of what you're eating and see if there's a link between increased gas problems?
My advice is to always trust your instincts, and to go with what you feel is the right thing to do. However, if you don't have endo then a lap would be a pretty unpleasant procedure to put yourself through 🙈

justtheonethen · 04/12/2016 17:48

Agree. There really is no need for that at the moment. Give it some time!

topaz22 · 04/12/2016 17:49

i have endo too and have had a laparoscopy to remove it. periods are unbelievably painful and normally loads of pain the whole month and especially during and after sex. really sounds like ibs not endo

MouseLove · 04/12/2016 21:25

I think it's VERY normal to feel like the whole world is pregnant and you'll never be pregnant the first few cycles of TTC. You start to doubt your own fertility. But really, there's no need to worry at this stage. You would really help yourself by relaxing, enjoying the experience and letting nature allow you to get pregnant in the best body experience you can give it. That means being healthy body, mind and soul.

Do you ever have an urgent need to go to the loo? Tummy spasms? Heavy and painful periods? Does the feeling of going to the loo pass after you've been?

ringaling · 04/12/2016 22:26

First thing on a morning I have a rush to go and have a bowel movement.
Soon as that happens I'm fine for rest of the day ..I was reading a morning rush is common with ibs.
My periods are probably medium flow first two days then light for 2-3
Not really painful no,I get cramp but take some painkillers and it eases it away.
By the 3rd day no pain at all.
Then no more pain till first day of period
If anything my periods are becoming less painful the older I do get.

It sounds every bit like IBS and nothing like endo. If your having convinced yourself that you have endo is anything to do with not falling pregnant on your first cycle then rest assured that getting pregnant can take much longer than we are led to believe!

It is possible to have no symptoms with endo, but this is true of many things! The symptoms you do have do not fit with endo, and as such I think it would be completely unnecessary to put yourself through a procedure.

Went to the doctors today and he pretty much laughed me out the surgery.
He asked how many days between my periods I told him 28.
Asked me if I bled between periods I said no.
He asked if I had pain I said no then he felt my stomach and lower stomach (to humor me I think) then said it felt fine and did it hurt and I said no.
Then he sent me on my way ..so basically think I have to stop worrying.

That's great news. And yes, I think you need to stop worrying too. Relax and enjoy the TTC journey. You'll get that BFP I promise!
