Anyone ttc after full thyroidectomy?

Thinking about ttc 3rd after having had full thyroidectomy over 2 years ago. Had some problems since including twitching muscles after too high a dose of levothyroxine last October. Still have that but it's much better than it was and neurologist not concerned as no other symptoms. Consultant said I need to have TSH less than 2 before ttc to avoid problems with goitre in baby and lessen chance of mc. Have two dc age 6 and 9 and I'm 32 so need to be more proactive now and actually do something. Just a bit nervous and wondering whether anyone has any experience they could share? x

I think you're on the wrong board kitty-this is one normally for people considering abortion.

You might get more responses on the conception board or maybe general health.

Good luck whatever you choose.Smile

I've asked MNHQ to move your post for you.

Oh goodness, sorry Blush Thank you for asking MN to move it to the appropriate board.

Hi Kitty

I had a full thyroidectomy in 2008, my dd1 was conceived 6months later and my dd2 was conceived 5years after that.. both pregnancies were problem free I was monitored by my endocrinologist every 6 weeks and had scans every 4 weeks to check growth of babies I'm on a high dose of thyroxine (250mcg) and was all through my pregnancies too. Both of my dd's were monitored after birth for 48hrs and had to have three separate blood tests to check their levels and both were fine. I did have one mmc in between them but think that was just bad lack as opposed to problems with my medication/levels etc.

As long as you are feeling healthy and have had a blood test recently to make sure your dose is correct there should be no reason it would impact your chances of conceiving and you will be monitored closely once you are pregnant so don't worry and good luck! Smile

Not had thyroidectomy but have underactive thyroid

Yes tsh level under 2, please read nice guidelines so you are aware of the standard practice, I had to explain them to 5 GPs this pregnancy to get correct treatment.

Make sure when they do a blood test they know that you're pregnant and the correct levels required, otherwise a very very busy gp will look at results and say 'normal' no change required without looking further into your notes.

I've had to get quite pushie with receptionists as they don't want me 'telling' Doc how to do their job but I explain that there is a different normal in pregnancy and the doc might not of ever come across a pregnant lady with this issue before in their career. i don't mind being pushie as it's my child's life at stake - I lost my first pregnancy and did not want to go through it again.

My midwife was fully aware of the correct treatment but you don't get to see them until 8 weeks ish and this is too late, you need blood tests and extra meds asap.

I am serverly hypo but still have a thyroid- just conceived but my consultant wanted my tsh to be sub 1.5 and the moment I conciceved to have a retest and monitoring. She did say it would take a long time to conceive for me given my blood tests and hormone levels... so I am bit surprised to have only taken 5 months.... !

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the replies. It's good to hear some success stories!

I got overmedicated just over a year ago and I ended up with extreme anxiety (the kind I had when hyperthyroid but worse) and really bad muscle twitches. My T4 had doubled in six weeks so although it was just inside the normal range, it had shot up way too quickly and made me feel horrendous. My legs felt as though they were going to give way, I thought I was going to die. I know it's silly but the one thing that really worries me is how I will react to the increase in levothyroxine that they suggest when you fall pregnant. It seems I am extremely sensitive to any change. I still have muscle twitches - used to think I had a neurological disorder coming on but no worse and no medical professional is concerned. Feel as though I'm the only one who has had that one issue so it's hard to know how I will react to increased dose. I'm on 125mg a day now. TSH is officially too high but I'm being treated according to T4 to avoid that happening again. Endo said they can give me T3 to decrease TSH instead of increasing T4 prior to pregnancy. Just want to go into this as safely as possible.

Thanks for replies x
