How much can/should GP help

Been TTC for nearly 18 months. Having sex every other day pretty much consistently throughout this time. Had a blood test at GP and results normal. She has now said 'that's it that's all we can do for you'. She said this is because I am under 35 and already have DC. Is that it? Is that really as far as it goes in terms of medical help/investigation?

I know it can take a long time but I just can't get my head round it. Surely there is a reasonably high likelihood that something is up with me physically? When I've managed to conceive In a fairly short space of time previously?

Any advice massively appreciated.

I suspect its more to do with your PCT not funding investigations due to the fact that you already have a child than there being no issue. It sounds like private treatment would be the only way forward for you. I used to have some connection through work to fertility services - the criteria for acceptance is very, very tight. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.

That doesn't sound right at all. I have a child from a previous relationship (dp has none). Out pct won't cover the cost of IVF for us but they did do most testing to get a diagnosis. There's only one test that I would have to pay for and it's amh.

Thanks delilah so what should I be asking my GP for? I have two DC (but with same partner as now so maybe that's why?)

Rubbish. That's not all they can do for you. Is your GP saying that if you want to be referred for further tests or ivf you need to go privately? I would ask them directly and specifically why they will not fund it in your case, and ask for it in writing if not clear. You should next be referred for an ultrasound and then to fertility specialists at your local hospital.

Day 2-5 FSH and oestrogen test, day 21 progesterone test and your dp should have a sperm analysis. This is the bare minimum I would expect. I ended up seeing a nurse practitioner rather than a gp and she was really thorough. After the tests she referred us to the fertility clinic where I had my prolactin tested and dp had a further and more detailed test. This gave us the diagnosis of antisperm antibodies. Not all clinics do this test as standard.

My GP couldn't do much but she referred me to the assisted conception unit at the hospital and I had a scan, day 2 blood tests, chlamydia and rubella tests and then was put on clomid. I'm under 35, have a DS with the same partner. I did pay to jump the queue with my first appointment so I don't know if that helped. Definitely look in to the services at your hospital and push for a referral! Good luck

Oh and DH has a sperm test through the GP as part of the referral process!

Wallcalendar · 04/12/2016 06:33

Thanks so much for the advice. So plan of action is - DH to got to GP and get tested, then I'll go to GP again and ask for referral to hospital fertility clinic?

My GP did the sperm test based on my referral, so you could go back and ask first? Either way though the clinic would have done the test so if the GP won't do it it doesn't matter!
