Hi everyone
How soon after coming off the pill did your periods start i have been off it for 34 days now and had a withdrawel bleed 30 days ago. i know that i cant expect them to come back properly straight away but i would really appreciate hearing how long others had to wait. i had a little spotting yesterday morning and then nothing until about an hour ago and that also could only be described as a spot and now nothing. has this happened to anyone else. i know its not life threatening but i would really like to know what to expect.

I am also very similar, my last period was the week before christmas, I was expecting my first one around about the end of Jan (I have come off pill before and got straight back to normal) but nothing, within that 1st month we didn't 'do it' so I knew I was not PG, then 10 days ago 'did it' thinking I was due any day and I would be OK, now nothing still. On one hand I am hoping I am not PG and I was foolish, but on the other hand probably wouldn't mind.

So I am very interested to hear the replies to this thread as well.

Are you trying to conceive ?

MrsMcJnr · 15/02/2007 14:52

Probably not what you want to hear but I got a normal pattern back right away. Took me 8 months to conceive though. Hope things settle down soon.

Hi thanks for the replies. no not trying to conceive but like yourself it wouldnt be the end of the world if i did. have been using condoms although not 100% properly but even still i cant see that i would have gotten pregnant. i would just love to see it come back just so i would feel normal again i have been having cramps on and off for about a week not bad or anything just annoying. let me know how you get on please.

Interesting thread, I've always wanted to know other people's experiences with this. I came off the pill at the end of my monthly pack and had my "pill period" (for lack of better description) as usual and then just did not go back on the pill on the seventh day I usually would. Much to my surprise, I went on to have a totally normal "real" period bang on the dot 28 days later that lasted the usual amount of days. I have to admit I was really shocked at this b/c from what I'd been led to assume by the literature that comes with the pill and from my doctor, it normally takes at best about 3 months for your periods to go back to normal. I realise that is probably the standard time frame for most people and I was hoping b/c of my painfull periods when not on the pill that I could catch a break for at least a couple more months. DH and I were using condoms that first month I came off the pill as recommended and once that month passed I got pregnant the first try (once again much to my shock and this time excitement as well!). It definitely varies a lot from woman to woman when resuming their periods when coming off the pill. My friend actually never properly got her period back but two months later after coming off the pill she was pregnant. I wonder whether your natural period cycles make a difference actually. I have never missed a period (well, until I got pregnany obviously) since I was eleven and started menstruating and I have never been late, they have always run like clockwork. This friend of mine on the other hand, has always had irregular periods. I wonder whether that is a good predictor for how your body will react when coming off the pill?

It's a kind of "how long is a piece of string" question. Some women get a normal cycle back immediately, others wait up to a year for their first normal period.

I was one of those women who immediately got their normal cycle back, but hopefully there'll be a more experienced lady than I who can advise how long to leave it before seeing a doctor if your periods don't start right away.

It always seems funny to wish for your period to arrive when you're ttc, but sometimes you do find yourself in that position. I hope the witch visits soon!

Hugs,
Artoo.

I would ask if you can recall what your periods were like pre pill taking days. If they were irregular then chances are they will revert back to this irregularity.

With some women their cycle returns straight away, with others not. I would say that the pill itself is not responsible for failure to ovualte but what it can do is mask the symptoms of any underlying problem that has always been there.

If your periods are still haphazard given time (say within the next three to six months) I would ask your GP to have a blood test done to see what your hormones are like. If your hormone levels are awry then your cycle will be as well. If a blood test is done then the GP must compare both your LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulation hormone) and certainly not just look at these as separate items. LH and FSH are two hormones crucial to the whole ovulation process, if these two are out of sync then ovulation will not happen regularly.
