Could it be a very early miscarriage, or has my cycle just gone nuts?

Hi there - hope someone has come across this as I'm very puzzled...
Started TTC again in Jan (DS now 11 months), I'd had 3 cycles of 28-29 days having scaled down BF so figured things were back on track. However in Jan and again this month though I thought I had ovulated at the usual time (14 days ish), AF started at 19 days (Jan) and 17 days (Feb). Much lighter than normal, but went on for same amount of time.
I assumed my cycle was just a bit nuts, though it's never been before, but someone suggested maybe there was a chance it was a very very early miscarriage i.e. just after fertilisation?
Anyone expereinced this, it doesn't sound too likely, or does it?

could be. smothing like one in three conceptions don't make it to 12 weeks and most losses are in the first weeeks - aprticually before period was due. It's called a chemical pregnancy. very harsh reality is that there is nothing that you could have done to change what happened if it was a conception.

That said many of us do sometimes have random short or long ccles due to stress and stuff.

Well, it has been a pretty stressful time at work recently, plus I've not been so well (DS bringing all sorts of viruses home from nursery!) so maybe it'll all sort itself out. Still a bit worrying though... at least if they have been early miscarriages I hadn't had chance to get all excited about the idea of a baby. Guess I'll see if it continues for a few more months before I make an appointment to see the doc...

no it wouldn't be an early miscarriage. If fertilisation occurs the embrio doesn't implant for 5-7 days after fertilisation so would be far too early to be considered a miscarriage. A chemical pregnancy is where the egg does fertilise and does implant to a degree but not totally, and your af would then arrive as was normally the case, and in the event the egg had fertilised and not implanted at all it would simply pass with your normal period.

If you're still breastfeeding at all this can still affect your cycle so is most likely that.

please don't think about babies that were probably never there x

No it wouldn't be. If you have an early miscarriage it would actually make your af slightly later than usual and slightly heavier. If you have a failed implantation the egg still has to come out with the womb lining, which has started to builditself up to expect the fertilised egg iyswim.

Thanks for correcting my mistake kittywaits and wannabe

Fingerscrossed,it can take a good while for your your cycle to settle down properly when you are still breastfeeding.
If you are seriously ttc why not get some ovulation sticks?
I know it can be very frustating when you don't know what's happening with your cycle, good luck

That's a bit of a relief - though still very weird after many years of a 28 day cycle to suddenly get two months of 17 or 19 days! Have now stopped bf as it just wasn't working now that I'm back at work so perhaps things will get back to normal. Normally I can tell when I'm ovulating (CM changes) so this also added to the weirdness as AF only a few days after. Still, the human body is an unpredictable beast, though I have a lot more respect for it following the whole baby business. At least a short cycle means more opportunities to try for no. 2 so am still looking on bright side!

Thanks for all your messages, much appreciated everyone!

Hi,

Just wanted to add a comment. the length of your periods can change. Particularly after having kids. Im ghuessing Im older than you guys, and I have three kids now. My periods were always 28 days but since about a year after number 3 baby I now have 21 days max! It has been as short as 15 days. All is considered in the normal range, but its bad news for me! LOL

good luck!
