Clomid and side effects

Hi, I have been prescribed Clomid, I have just read through the leaflet inside the tablet box, I have never seen so many side effects and some of them are quite frightening, I have read up a bit on the tablets but wasn't aware - until reading the leaflet - that they were linked to birth defects? Has anyone had any bad effects from these tablets? I may be panicking, my sister said that the side effects stated in some everyday tablets were as bad but we all take those without som much concern, I suppose she is right.

Hi mum2jay, I'm currently taking Clomid at the moment, this is the 2nd cycle out of 3, I'm on 100 mg, but this will increase to the max next month of 150mg. Are you being monitored at all, ultrasounds, blood tests etc, these should be carried out whilst on clomid. I can say hand on heart that I have had no side effects that I am aware of.

islandgirl · 15/06/2004 15:22

mum2jay - I have been on clomid twice, and the first time I developed cysts, which meant I stopped for a cycle, they disappeared and I started again for anther cycle with no problems. I felt fine all the time, and had no other side effects, and just felt that I had 'lost' a month that was all. I sense that your sister is probably right!

kiwicath · 15/06/2004 19:51

mum2jay, I've also been on it due to endo but had no side effects what so ever. Babe 5.5 months now and as fit and healthy as they come. Good luck.

Haven't been on Clomid - yet - may be looking at it in a few months time, but I can reassure you as far as what your sister said. When I was in New York, the adverts for prescription drugs are soooo frightening: headache tablet adverts end with a voiceover saying "may cause brain damage, hair loss and gangrene" (well not exactly but you get the picture!). Basically they have to cover their backs in case anyone decides to sue them (which they frequently do in the US!)

I have been on clomid twice, both times I got pg on the second cycle so I am very impressed with the results. Re side effects, mine were unpleasant but nothing terrible. I gained weight immediately on them, felt very bloated and had mood swings. In fact it was a bit like being pre-menstrual but lasted for more than a few days. These side effects were a small price to pay for getting pregnant. I did miscarry the first clomid pregnancy at 12 wks (fetal size was 9.3 weeks) and I have read the miscarriage risk is slightly higher with clomid but this was disputed by my consultant. I have never heard of a link with birth defects.

mum2jay · 16/06/2004 11:35

Thank you all for your messages, they are very reassuring.

Malikni, the only monitoring I'm aware of so far is that on day 21 I have to go and have a blood test to see if I have ovulated? Doc says that I should ovulate on day 14. Because I don't have AF's I have been prescribed northisterone (prosgesterone tablets) for 10 days and then AF should start, on the second day of AF I have to take the Clomid (50mg) for 5 days (days 2-6). I'm glad you have had no side effects and wish you lots of luck.

Moomin, I haven't started mine yet either, I got my prescription last week but we have a lot going on at the moment, so may leave it until next month when things have (hopefully!) settled down.

Mum2Jay, Have you been told you've got PCOS? I came off pill in Jan 03 and didn't have af's at all, I too done exactly what you are doing now, progestrone for 10 days, then af came and clomid day 2-6. Progestrone always gave me af, but doctor was hoping it would kick start me, but unfortunately if I stopped taking the Prog then the af's stopped, I have been on Metformin for last 7 weeks, and I have had 2 af's on my own, ok 2 months apart (March then May) but as least it's a start. Wishing you luck

mum2jay · 16/06/2004 16:44

Staceyk, yes I was diagnosed at the end of May with PCOS. I was told that they suspected I had it a few years ago, I was 18 at the time and didn't take it very seriously, they told me that I would have problems conceiving and then when I was 22 I got pg, it was a big shock as Jay ds was not planned but things have worked out really well, the docs said that I would probably be 'ok' after Jay, but now it seems they're not. I have only had 1 AF since Jay which was in October 03 and went on and on until a female doc gave me the prosgesterone in February because I told her I couldn't cope with it any longer and they sent me for tests. My doc who is male wouldn't give me anything to stop the AF before she did, he referred me to hospital as a priority in December and I got my appointment in May!!

Mum2Jay, we sound like mirror images of each other, the only difference being you have your little Jay.
Keep in touch, let me know how you are doing.
I've got to keep taking metformin, and then if nothing happens I'm booked in for a lap & dye in October? for them t check out tubes etc.

Moomin · 17/08/2004 20:05

can I resurcet this thread to ask another question?
I'm on CD 23 on my 1st round of clomid. The only side effects I got were headaches and thirst for the days I took the tablets (I'm on 100mg from day 2 to 6)
Now I feel absolutely knackered (sorry for repeating myself, I've been moaning about this on other threads too!) and quite hormonal. Dd really wound me up today to the point where I went into another room and told her to F off under my breath and I cried when I saw a family in Cornwall reunited after the floods!
Does this sound par for the course?

bunny2 · 17/08/2004 20:53

Moomin, I was like a she-devil whilst on clomid, I was horrid to ds and dh. Unfortunately I think this is common. I was also very thirsty. The tiredness came at around the same point as yours - just a few days after I'd o'd. That was becaue I was pregnant!!! Good luck with it, it worked for me twice. Hope you have as much success.

Moomin · 18/08/2004 09:02

blimey bunny2! Did you have any other symptoms at this stage? I had really sore boobs with dd but only a week after my period had been due and I'm a few days off AF due date. I don't think I can get my hopes up though; I've done too much of that in the last 20 months. Remind me, bunny2, what were you prescribed clomid for?

I just wondered if tiredness can be hormonal and if so, did anyone else on clomid have it?

Also, did anyone have clomid side effects throughout the month, not just when you took the tablets?

Morgan · 18/08/2004 20:19

Just to say I am starting clomid shortly so would also be grateful for any advice on side effects etc.

bunny2 · 19/08/2004 10:22

Moomin, I was given clomid as my cycle was very irregular and on that basis my consultant diagnosed that I want ovulating (or ovulkating regularly enough to conceive). After several years of trying, I did get pg on clomid within 2 cycles TWICE so it obviously worked! I only had the tiredness on the cycles that I conceived, not on the others but that maybe coincidence. I do know I get overwhelmingly tired on very early pregnancy - it is my first symptom. As for the moods, I got those before ovulation and before af so twice a cycle .
Good luckxxx

Moomin · 19/08/2004 12:36

thanks bunny2.
Morgan - most common side effects seem to be the thirst and headaches (so drink lots of water then you won't dehydrate), PMS-type moods, weight-gain and hot flushes. Lots of people have some, and lots have hardly any. Like I've said mine was just the headaches/thirst. There are lots of others which are listed on the leaflet in your packet but these can be a bit scaremongery (see bottom of this thread!)

What are you on clomid for and how much are you taking?

MumZeeBaird · 01/01/2021 18:59

I’ve started clomid today so no symptoms yet apart from a slight headache. Crossing all fingers and toes that I don’t get more symptoms. I’d be interested to find out from @mum2jay how you got on as this was years ago.
