Probably a really stuid question, but as dp has twins on his side (his paternal grandmother had twins) and also on my mother's side-and my brother has boy&girl twins, I thought it might be a possibility for me!
Unfortunately I wasn't concentrating much in biology lessons, so have probably got it all wrong....any advice?

not sure but will bump this for you

tendancy to twins only runs down the mothers side, so as it is your dp's grandmother, and your SIL that has carried the twins, you don't have a family history.
Also, speaking as a mum of twins, I think you are slightly crazy.

the tendency to have non-id twins runs down the maternal line - ie you more often release 2 eggs at a time.

Id twins can happen to anyone at anytime (me included ).

Nothing you can do that I am aware of to increase the chances. Unless it would be something like drug that stimulates ovulation - and then you could end up with quads or more

Both types of naturally concieved twins are genetic ie identical and fraternal. They do run in families but I can't remember the little rhyme that relates it all skipping generations and stuff. Someone is is bound to know.

The only oter way of increasing your change of twins in clomid/IVF - NOT that I'm recomendign it.

I think the later you have children and the more children you have, the more likely you are to have twins. However, I don't think you can really 'try' to do these things, so not much help!

Thanks for advice!

Having had a few minutes to think about this since op, have decided it's prob a good thing can't 'try' for twins as already have dd11, dd6 and a dd10-days-old who is curled up on my lap!
So guess the next thing to think about would be trying for a boy-but wonder if would feel bad actively doing something to get a boy and then ending up with a girl anyway.

Or maybe should be thinking about having a break....but doubt it.

Ah Madame you're right. I forgot about the age and ethnicity thing. Older women are more likely to have them as are Balck african women. No one knows why though!!

Surely - the image of you with a curled up baby on your lap sounds lovely. But wher is your computer!

Kelly1978 · 07/02/2007 15:38

taller women are too. And i think asians are least likely to have them, which surprised me, as dp is indian.

The thought of wanting to plan twins 10 days after birth makes me wince

Kelly1978 · 07/02/2007 15:46

10 days I missed that bit!
Carrying twins was a nightmare for me, it's making my insides go all funny thinking about it, lol.

laptop on sofa! Think if the next birth is to be any easier will sneeze baby out-but perhaps should put off making decisions till hormones have stopped flying round.
