I have just got back from GP's appointment to ask advise about a self diagnosed short luteal phase (8 days and I've been charting for 3 months now) and she refused to even acknowledge that such a problem even existed, she was adamant that there were always 14 days between ovulation and start of AF !! Don't know what to do now- any advise ? Thanks.

Must admit I'm comfused because I thought ov = AF... but your explanation, charlieq, makes sense too. Hmmm

Just done some searching on the net and now I'm v confused. Ah well, will wait and see what the Doc says next week about our situation.

Apologies for hijacking the thread

Rubbish absolute rubbish!!

I am shocked at how people get thru medical school spouting such nonsense... and not being willing to engage with a chart......

You defo need a different dr... and if you have no Luck I would consider taking it higher up TBH. Gp's really do need to educate themselves... so many women can be helped with very low key treatments (b6 etc etc) without needing to ttc for 2 years to get refered!!!

and i have a 12 day LP- Always have!! Mine has NEVER been 14 days!! lol

colditz- I am pretty sure (not doctor but went through a lot of this when diagnosed with PCOS) that you can ovulate at any time. If you ovulate before the spontaneous shedding takes place, you can get pg. When I was having 'anovulatory' cycles I was testing myself for temp changes etc which show you've ovulated, and never had any. I would have a huge bleed at weird, random times but always longer than my former 30-32 day cycle had been.
When I conceived DS1 I was still having really long cycles but could just tell I'd ovulated (due to vile PMS)- he was conceived on day 21 so not far off your o date...

Hi HelenL - and all
I thought I would be cheeky and test my new consultant today on the Lutual phase stuff - and actually she was pretty good - she was okay with my self diagnosis and agreed that ladies do have probs TTC due to this issue due to implantation

She recommended I continued the B6 but to come off the asprin prior to IVF due to possible bleeding (if they slip with an implement ) as asprin slows the clotting. But again pretty well read re. how it can help with implantation but she would only prescribe to ladies experiencing a type of miscarriage (didnt quite get what type).

So at least this one was aware and prescribes prostogen to prolong the Luteal phase during IVF cycles....hope this gives hope that there are a few good ones out there!

Does anyone know if this can also be 'too' long? Mine appears to be 16 days, can it be, and if so, is that a problem??! Thanks.

I can't see a long luteal phase being a problem- it's only a problem if short because then it can be a sign of low progesterone...
