Acupuncture & TTC/pregnancy

Has anyone had acupuncture to help them conceive or just to reduce stress during pregnancy & TTC??
My mom has given me a number of someone her friend used throughout her whole pregnancy and even labour. Thought I'd give it a try to see if it will help me chill out a bit when I'm next pregnant as have had 3mc's and already starting to stress and not planning on TTC again until next month!

Yes I have. in 2005 I was using the depo injection as contraceptive which meant I didnt have periods then we decided to try for a baby but my periods hadnt returned. In Oct 2005 I had a 3 week course of acupuncture. My periods returned along with my libido and I was pregnant Jan 2006 and had a baby boy Oct 24th

Thanks Gingeme. I think I'm going to give it a go. xxx

I did. I had it for about a year and it didn't work but I think it helped. I ended up having IVF and continued with the acupuncture throughout treatment and pregnancy.

Thanks Katierocket, Previously I haven't had too much of a problem concieving but no viable pregnancies so I am kind of hoping that it may help in making my eggs healthy as both my dh and I have had tests that show no genetic problems I'm thinking that there may be something wrong with either the egg or sperm from the last 3 pregnancies.
Well, all I can do is try. xxx

Hi me again. Just a word of warning it can work out expensuve. But in my opinion well worth it. Ive never felt so good in my life. I had chinese massage which hurt like hell but made me feel fantastic. Chinese herbs too which basicaly are for detox. They were pretty yuk but again well worth it. Just wish I could afford to have it done again.

have you all tried your local colleges/universitys? my uni does it at cheaper rates, for the general public

heresfor2007 · 09/01/2007 14:30

I know what you mean about the price. I have enquired through a recommendation and the initial consultation (2 1/2 hours) is £95!! , then £65 (1 1/4 hours) there after. I know that some places do free consultations. I am going to initially go with the recommendation that I've had as I know that she has specialised in pregnancy (although I don't know the circumstances), then when the funds (which aren't very big anyway!!) run out then I may well try the colleges etc - thanks scorpio for that.
It's kind of like before I got married - I could justify having a few facials & massages etc, now I'm married I can't justify spending the money on such luxeries.

Worth it if theres a beautiful little baby as a result

katierocket · 09/01/2007 16:51

I didn't have any problem conceiving DS, got pregnant first go. It was when we tried for no2 that the problems started. No reason - unexplained secondary infertility. I'm sure the acupuncture helped but just don't go thinking it will definitely result in a pregnancy. GOod luck.

I am on cycle 5 out of 6 on clomid 100mgs and have been thinking about acupuncture to see if that helps.

Does anybody know when is the best time in your cycle to have it???

Gingeme · 10/01/2007 13:24

I wasnt having any periods when I had mine. Thats the main reason I had it so dont think it matters realy. If you have an accupuncturist near you pop in and ask.

jem1969 · 10/01/2007 13:33

I started in acupuncture in Sept mainly to prepare me for IVF which I thought I'd start early in 2007.
I had slightly short cycles with lots of spotting etc and DH also had sperm issues.
At the IVF clinic turned out that his sperm was fine but so decided to wait a bit for IVF but carried on with the acupuncture.
Now 9 weeks pregnant! I don't know whether it was the acupuncture but it was definitely relaxing anyway and he has lots of success (he only told me this after I got pregnant- wasn't doing a hard sell or guaranteeing anything.)
I was seeing him once a week at about £45 for an hour in central Loondon. Not cheap but definitely cheaper than IVF etc. I'm still seeing him once a fortnight now.

Congratulations jem1969. Well worth it then. I absolutely loved having it. Like you say its sooooooo relaxing isnt it? Did you have any of the massages too? I used to come out from the clinic and fel so evigorated. Well done you

Hi. I had today my first accupuncture after having had a m/c in Sep and no period since. Needed to have 2nd ERPC in Dec since the one in Sep wasn't succesful. I hope accupuncture will help. Stay tuned and let me know how your are going on.

Gingeme · 10/01/2007 13:41

Good luck to you d4phne

heresfor2007 · 10/01/2007 15:06

Hi all,
Thanks for all of your comments, I have now made an initial consultation (£95!!!) for a week on Fri. I think even if it relaxes me a bit it will help things. The sessions after this are £65 for 1 1/4 hrs so not sure how frequently I'll be able to afford them. D4phne - I hope things are sorted for you now, I had 2 failed erpc's after my 2nd mc and ended up with an injection of methotrexate. I have since found out that I have got a bicornuate uterus which explains why they prob didn't work (1st mc it worked fine!). I'm sure this won't be the for you, I just know how horrible and frustrating it is as you just want to try and move on. I now don't see the gp that I am registered under as she always makes me feel as though I am wastin her time. I went in twice to she her 4 and 6 weeks after my d&c to say that I was still bleeding and she just said give it a few more weeks as it can take up to 8 weeks!! I went to see another dr the following day and he referred me to the hospital straight away.
Congratualtion jem!! - I like stories like that - it gives everyone a little hope.
xxx

I've been having acupuncture for just over a year. It's certainly kept me relaxed during this whole TTC game, but during last year we discovered there were issues with DH's sperm, so we're currently going through IVF (ICSI) treatment. My acupuncturist says that there is some research to show that having acupuncture alongside IVF treatment can double your chances of the IVF succeeding.

If nothing else, I tend to fall asleep during the acupuncture, so it seems to be relaxing me

My sister-in-law visited the same acupuncturist after TTC her first for 9 months, 3 months later she was pregnant. She definitely thinks the acupuncture helped!

I pay £31 a visit (I'm no-where near London though), and during my IVF I'm having acupuncture once a week. If anyone is trying to locate a reputable acupuncturist near them, have a look on the British Acupucture Council website.

Good luck!
Artoo.
