Long periods???

What are the implications on ttc of long periods? I tried doing a search for info but couldn't really find anything.

My friend is on her 11th day of her period, she has just come off the pill 2 months ago, she is worried that her period will run over into ovulation - is this even possible?? Or will her cycle just be longer accordingly??

Does anyone have any thoughts on this??

I had very long periods when I first came off the pill - I assumed it was a conflation of usual withdrawal bleed and 'real' menstruation (just an assumption, though). My cycle settled down after a while, and probably your friend's will too; mine is pretty short now (25/6 days). I don't know how/if it will affect her ovulation though - if she's worried about it she might as well talk to a doctor or try phoning NHS direct, they're usually pretty good.

If her period is heavy (i.e lots of bleeding) as well as long in duration she may well be advised to get this checked out medically.

My cycle is 34 days with about 7 days of bleeding. Not sure what this meant re ovulation but both my babies were 42 weeks. So she might get a long pg?!

She doesn't have internet access, but I don't have all the info about her situation.

She had nightmare periods when we were younger, that's why she went on the pill. I never went on the pill so I don't have any experience to share with her... hence asking for advice on here.

Her periods usually last about 2 weeks, then she has 2 weeks until the next period arrives.

She says that they are normal flow throughout the period, although this time she experienced 5 days of blood, a day of nothing then bleeding again until today (11) is has lessened a bit.

Does it sound like she needs to go to her GP Atilla?

Hi pretzel,

I would say yes, a visit to the GP is adviseable with a view to seeing a gynaecologist as well.

pretzel · 05/01/2007 16:08

Oh. Not sure how to tell her that. I was all breezy saying "I'm sure it's fine, there'll be someone on MN who has experienced the same thing"
What should I say to her without causing her to worry??

Will it affect her chances of having a baby??

i am sure your friend should do as attila always advises and go to the doctors but i have had very similar symptoms in the past and didnt have any problems concieving 2 children. so try and give her some positive news too. i bled for about 4 weeks on one cycle and i frequently get spotting during the month and have 45+ day cycles. obviously there is something not quite right with my body and probably hers too, but the only time i have had a problem concieving is now! so as well as advising she sees her doc, give her some positive feedback too!

good grief greedy: 4 weeks! Were you still standing by the end of it?

greedyforbabies · 16/01/2007 15:24

it does sound dramatic doesn't it perve! bleeding for 4 weeks! it was never heavy bleeding and i was only 18 so didn't think too much of it! i remember being fed up of using tampons thhough!
