Ovulation Question

This is my first month of using Persona and I have also been using ovulation test sticks as my GP thinks I may not be ovulating.

Today is CD19 and I was very excited to get the ovulation symbol on my Persona this morning. However, when I used the test stick a few hours later, it didn't indicate that I might be about to ovulate.

Which is more accurate and is there any chance I am about to ovulate?

The first test is the more likely. The one first thing in the morning.

There is every chance it is ovulation on day 19.

I used to ovulate on day 17/18 I also used persona when doctors thought I may not be ovulating.

Thanks - did you find the Persona was accurate for you? So far I've had a red light every day so I wasn't sure what was going on.

I've used persona in the past and found it ok.

Ovulation can be later than day 14, I've been having scans to see when I ovulated. by day 16 had folicles but no ovulation - popped at day 18.

How does that work - do you have to go for a scan every day?

Hi Littlestar,

Ovulation test sticks are not actually a good idea to use if you are not ovulating.

These kits measure LH and work on two misleading principles; namely that a rise in LH is immediately followed by ovulation and that women only have one rise in LH every month. Both of these statements are not true. It is quite possible to ovulate earlier, later or not at all in any given cycle (thus it is possible to have periods without ovulating).

OPK's are prone to give false positive results if the levels of LH you are producing are higher than normal.

Have you had a blood test done to see what your hormone levels are like?. If not I would seriously consider having such a test done as it will be accurate. If you were to have a blood test done they must compare the level of LH measured against that of your FSH. These levels can look okay individually but they must be compared to see any imbalance. If this is not done the test is meaningless.

I had blood tests on day 3 & 21 of my last-but-one cycle. My GP said the day 21 test indicated I had a low level of progesterone and may not be ovulating. However he won't do anything else until we get the results of DH's sperm test in mid-Jan, apart from suggesting I use ovulation tests in the meantime. Apart from that he hasn't given me much information, hence I'm spending so much time on Mumsnet!

Hi Littlestar

What were the results of the day 3 and 21?. On the day 3 test were the levels of LH and FSH both measured and compared. Comparison of these two hormone levels is crucial.

If your progesterone is low then chances are your LH and FSH levels are also awry. LH and FSH play a crucial role in the ovulation process at the beginning.

Would not waste your money on OPK's particularly if it is suspected that you are not ovulating regularly. They won't help at all and may give you a false positive result. If the levels of LH you are producing are higher than normal (a common problem with polycystic ovaries for instance) then the kit will just read that.

My GP didn't go into detail about the test results, he just said the first test came back normal and mentioned something about thyroid. Then told me to make another appointment when my husband's results came back. To be honest, I got the impression he wasn't that knowledgeable (or interested) so am going to try a different doc next time.

This is probably a silly question but every month I get what I've always assumed were ovulation pains. Would I get those even if I'm not ovulating?
