Dear all,

I look forward to chatting with you all - this is such a great idea!! I found out at 2am yesterday that, after officially trying for a baby for a month, that I'm pregnant.

Myself and my h are delighted, but I'm worried too; I really hate my Doctor and the practice, they're really unfriendly and bizarrely one of the doctors was threatened by a disgruntled patient's husband last year(?) which explains a lot. My blood pressure's been high for about 4 years now, hence why I've been off of the pill for so long, but I'm overweight. Since September I've made a concerted effort to cut out treats, eat more fruit and veg and work out on my mini stepper each day, however, although I've lost about a stone, I'm still unhealthy. Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

Hi gerbiltamer - welcome to Mumsnet. Not sure I can help particularly with your queries, but congratulations on your pregnancy.

I was overweight in both my pregnancies, though it didn't seem to cause me any particular problems, I don't think. Never had the high blood pressure problem, but hopefully someone else might come along who knows about that...

Hey Jackie, thanks for the welcome and here's to a fruitful time on Mumsnet! I think some of the problem has been caused by Posh and the new breed of 'yummy mummies' - eek!

Congratulaions and welcome gerbiltamer! I was overweight when pregnant with my ds and had very high blood pressure throughout. I was more overweight when pregnant with my dd and my blood pressure wasn't a problem at all!

Just bear in mind that you won't necessarily be dealing with you GP though... you'll be under the care of a MW.
Try not to stress about it x

Hi gerbiltamer
Welcome to mumsnet. Prepare to spend half your life on here!
I don't suffer from particularly high blood pressure, but I was Very overweight when I got pregnant with my daughter. I was 20st 2lb at 5 weeks, and 23st by the time I got out of hospital after she was born. I'm diabetic because of my excessive weight, so it was a high risk pregnancy right from the start, but I now have a gorgeous contented one year old and am trying for number 2. I've lost all the weight I put on while pregnant and am back to 20st 3lb, but can't seem to find the motivation to lose any more.
Wishing you all the best for a happy & healthy pregnancy.

I'm still trying to get pregnant but I can pass on the info that has been given by my consultants and Gp - and tou can take it from ther. I have had very high blood pressure for several year but is controlled by medication.

Once I made the decion to try to concieve I asked to be swithed to "baby friendly" tablets. this has meant taking more tablet a day than I would have which isnt great but I reckon that if this means that I have a better and safer pregnancy for myself and babe this is worth it.

I have been told by both hospital and GP that if I do get pregnant that I should book in through GP ASAP. This is so they can get your current readings and to discuss meds if needed. Really don't mean to scare you - just stressing importance - high blood pressure before pregnancy means that you are at higher risk of diabetes (during pregnancy) and pre-eclamsia which puts both you and babe at risk.

In my local hopsital you would be put under the care of a consultant. Do remmber that this does not mean that you can't plan a normal birth. You just nedd a little more looking after.

Now you are pregnant it not oyur weight that is the issue but your baseline blood pressure. So get down to your GP and get booked in. Very excited for you !!! hope this info helps

hi welcome to mumsnet, i am a new member too. i am also pregnant, and i already have a son who is 14 months old. as for high blood presure i don't have a clue, as for the weight - you don't have to eat for two, eat sensibly, go swimming and the best tip of all is to BREAST FEED!! hope u really enjoy your pregnancy. p.s i hate my doctors aswell and they are making me wait for a whole month for a MW appointment. xx

Breast feeding is brilliant for loosing weight. You burn masses of calories every day, just sitting on the sofa with a baby stuck to your nipple. Super.
