I'm new here but scrolling through, you all seem to give such good advice I thought I'd ask for some! We've been trying (in a 'if it does it does' sort of way!) since Dec 03 when I came off the pill. Since then, periods have been between every 28 - 35 days. Last few months have been no longer than 30 days. I'm now on day 43. I did a Clearblue digital last Weds and a Predictor on Sat (and the spare yesterday), all negative. No sign of my period although some v. light cramps (I usually have v. painful periods). What do you think? Is it just coming off the pill? Any advice gratefully received!

With my DS2 i did a few negative preg tests then a positive - did a doctors urine test a few days later which came back negative - did another home test = positive!!! Perhaps wait a week and do another first thing in the morning. Even though they say you can test at any time of day they are definately stronger in morning. Or you could always ask your Doctor for a blood test?

P.s i am on the pill and missed one accidentally this month - i am 4 days late - did a negative test yesterday but am still not ruling out pregnancy until my period comes!!

mummytojames · 18/05/2004 18:28

a late period could be caused by alot of things like stress change in diet stuff like that but if it helps most over the counter test you have useualy got to be gone a month before it shows up what i would do is give it another week then if its still no show go to the doctors and get them to do a test there useualy more sensitive so it would show it up

Branster · 18/05/2004 18:33

v good info from mummytojames. another cause for late period could be just a simple cold (were you poorly of lately?). It would be wonderful news if you were pregnant though! Fingers crossed!

noony · 19/05/2004 08:53

Thanks for the advice. Not poorly and have never been late before so it's very unusual. Perhaps it's just my body getting back into a rhythm after years of being on the pill. If there's no sign by the end of the week I'll take another test and let you know! It's one thing deciding to try for a baby, it's quite another when it starts to look like a reality! Can't help feeling slightly nervous - just wish I knew one way or another!

Oh Noony really feel for you, its a horrible feeling when trying for a baby, not too mention expensive with the amount of tests you use. Thinking about it can make your period very late, that happened to me. I did a test the day before i was due and it was posotive and i fell off the loo with shock as i had 6 months of being late, missing periods doing tests early, and when late and all negative.

Really hope you are!!!

Thanks for the support - aren't you all lovely! I've decided to (try to!) put it out of my mind and if there's still nothing by Saturday morning (which will be 47 days) I'll test again. How much money do you reckon those HPT companies make!!

It may be that you have had an anovulatory cycle this month. At 47 days it is likely that this is the case. Anovulatory cycles are in themselves not unusual.

Has anyone investigated the underlying cause of your very painful periods?.

noony · 19/05/2004 22:19

What's an anovulatory cycle? It sounds scary....

Painful is probably an overused term! I was just used to minimal cramps when on the pill so now I'm having 'proper' periods I'm finding it a bit of a shock. I'm sure they're no worse than most people's! I was just commenting on the fact that it's unusual for me to have no pain around the time I'm due on.

I was told by friends that during weeks 4-6 of pregnancy they had cramps which really worried them as they thought they were period pains even though they knew they were pregnant. They also said that none of the books they had read told them to expect this. When I was pregnant, while my periods were painful/crampy for first 2 days, the cramps with pregnancy were worse and the pains were due to uterus expanding to accomodate pregnancy!! Maybe this is what you have - let's hope so !!!!!!!

What's happening Noony??

gloworm · 24/05/2004 20:45

don't know if this helps, I was pretty sure I was pregnant and at 5 weeks test was negative...it didn't show up positive until week 6.

I think the waiting is the harded bit...try not to worry about it too much (easier said than done!)

Not sure if this is too late but in case it helps anyone.....I came off the pill in May 2003. No result for ages although my cycle seemed to be getting longer and longer. Got period on 14 March then nothing when nxt due (but did have what felt like period pains). Went to Gyneco on 5 June (ie pretty late by now but still -ve hometest (+ did a few tests @ home)). Gyneco told me definately not pgt. Did a test on Saturday (ie 31st May) as thought it was wierd because had never missed a period - and was +ve!!! Seems I am 11 wks pgt! So.......GP says that although the home tests are normally pretty reliable blood tests are better + gyneco can't tell in v early stages just by looking (won't be going back to the Gyneco who on top of that had been giving me all sorts of pills to take (apparently they won't harm bb)).
