Mid cycle bleeding

I have just had my mirena coil removed because we are ttc baby no 3 and want to know if anyone else has had mid cycle/post ovulation bleeds?

I have had them for the last 6 months or so but put it down to irregular bleeding because of the Mirena, I had it removed last week and now the bleeding is occuring again, it only lasts a couple of days, is not heavy and is quite red (sorry for the tmi bit!)

Am also getting mild cramps, is it worth asking my (useless) GP or just wait and see if it occurs again next cycle?

I am also concerned in case it reduces my chances of conceiving.

I would appreciate any advice you lovely ladies can give me!

Thanks in anticipation!

Girly xx

I've had mid-cycle bleeding. Sometimes I used to get slight spotting at ovulation, but other months I used to get light bleeding from a couple of days after ov for about a week. On those months I used to feel really bloated and crampy. I went to my GP and she sent me to see a consultant who arranged for me to have a hysteroscopy (where they insert and endoscope into your uterus) to check for polyps and to take a sample of tissue for analysis. This was done under a general. They didn't find any reason for the bleeding though, and it actually just stopped soon after the operation and I haven't had it since (about 6 years now). I think it may have been stress-related in my case.

Personally, I would wait to see if it settles down next cycle (as long as you are not feeling unwell, e.g. high temperature which could indicate some sort of infection) but if it doesn't I would definitely mention it to your doctor. Hopefully it will turn out OK but you never know.

BTW, it doesn't seem to have affected my chances of conceiving.

Thanks gingernut,

I have been fine, feeling well etc, just had mild cramps and bloating, I looked like I was 4 months gone yesterday (if only!)

I will monitor it over the next month and then go to the gp if it does not improve. I thought it was due to the mirena coil, so will wait a little while to see if everything settles down.

Hello Ladies,

I have also experienced mid-cycle spotting in the past and always thought it was something wrong with the egg being disposed at ovulation and it was the couse of my irregular periods. Anyhow, I have just gone throug mc and have been waiting for period and I think I spotted the spotting again so as it always bugged me I did a new search on the internet, (my GP didn't quite know either) and most of the search came up with good news:

Spotting refers to light blood shed that occur in between two menstruation. There are basically 3 type of spotting: -

  1. Midcycle Spotting ? Generally, an indicator of high fertility. This type will normally occur around ovulation as a result of shedding of excessive layers of endometrium which have built up under the influence of estrogen.

  2. Implantation Spotting ? An indicator of a possible pregnancy. This type will usually occur within 7-10 days after Ovulation.

  3. Pre-Menstrual Spotting ? This is early shedding of endometrium as progesterone level drops, which may begin a day or two before the actual menstruation.

There were ither articles confirming this find. Now, the opposite quiestion is worrying, does it mean that only the months of spotting are the ones that one ovulates? any thoughts?

Chances are that it will probably be due to the new hormonal activity going on since your mirena was removed, but to be on the safe side I would recommend that you visit your GP. Is it not possible to see an other GP in the same practice if you have no faith in yours?

Well it must have been the Mirena, I am now dpo6 and not a spot in sight! Also got quite strong ovulation pains bang on day 14 and an incredible urge to 'you know'

poppyseed, unfortunatley my one is the best of a bad bunch They do not deal with any family planning issues at all, merely point you in the direction of the local fpc where it takes weeks to get an appointment. I am reluctant to change gp cause you can always get an emergency appointment for the children and the m/w's attached to this surgery are excellent
