Help me decipher semen analysis please

Dp has had a semen analysis. His gp said all was fine, better than fine even but I want to check.

Results were:
Volume:1.5ml
Concentration:28.0
Normal forms:8%
Total number:42.0
Progressive:65%
Non progressive:6%
Non motile:29%

So as far as I can tell the concentration is good, progressive ones are good and normal forms (morphology) is good.

Not sure about volume and total number though. Seem to be reading that volume should be 2-5ml and total number should be between 40-300million so his would be at the very lower end?

So am I right in thinking that the quality is good but there aren't many of them or much of it?
Just confused as to why gp wouldn't have said that if so?

Any help much appreciated!

Hi, I currently work as a biomedical scientist in Andrology so I can tell you a little bit about what these results mean.
I'll start with the easy ones.
Morphology. To be classed as normal it needs to be equal or above 4% so if they have reported it as 8% then that's super normal.
Motility. To be normal it needs to be above 40% progressively motile so again. Good result there at 65%.
Ok concentration. A normal result is above 15 million/ml so at 28 that is well above normal.
Volume. To be normal it needs to be 1.5ml or above. So that is a normal result. Obviously this can vary dependant on the ejaculation.
Now. Your total sperm number is how many sperm were present in this particular ejaculation. So 1.5 multiplied by 28. Hence why this is 42 million sperm. So if your partner found that he produced a higher amount of semen then this number could increase. But to be classed as normal it needs to be above 39million sperm per ejaculate. Which his is.
So going by all of the parameters set out by the current World Health Organisation guidelines, that is a normal semen sample result.
The main things that can influence sperm is his abstinence period. I'm assuming that he abstained 2-7 days prior to producing his sample?
Whether he collected the whole sample is another important aspect. Most sperm are found in the beginning part of the ejaculate so if he managed to collect that then that helps.
If you are still concerned have a chat with your GP. There are several lifestyle changes that have been found to improve semen quality.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you that's really helpful. I think there was some fumbling with the tiny pot so perhaps not all of it went in! He abstained for 2 days before.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Very helpful.
