HELP - Am I having delusions!

BusyBee24 · 20/10/2015 10:21

Hi everybody

Hope you don't mind me posting here but really need some help!

Brief background I have a DS who is 5 and conceived via IVF - history of PCOS. I then had several more attempts at conceiving no. 2 but with no luck - failed IVFs, 2 miscarriages.

After the 2nd miscarriage decided to stop trying because it was all too hard.

That was back in early 2014.

Last week on day 40 of my cycle (not unusual for me to have long cycles) I started to feel a bit funny so I bought a pregnancy standard line test and did it in the afternoon - got a negative. Still felt funny later that day so tried a digital just to 100% rule it out and got a negative.

That was last Thurs since then forgot about it until this morning when I felt "funny" again. Have been feeling hungry and tired last couple of days but no sore books or anything like that.

Anyway did it with FMU and got a positive on a Superdrug digital test. I still can't believe it and am really unsure whether it is right.

Could anything mess with the result?

When I did the test last week it was 18 days after I last BD surely if I was pregnant it would show up by then????

HELP I AM SO CONFUSED!

Really worried it could be a false positive and if not worried I should be on the same pessaries etc that I have with my IVF pregnancies?

ALL HELP GRATEFULLY RECEIVED!

The limitations of the tests are detailed inside. There are a few things that can cause false positives but they're very rare. Things like chemotherapy drugs. If you are getting a positive test, the overwhelming likelihood is that you are pregnant.

The time between sex and positive test is fine. Considering that sperm can live for 5 days or maybe even more, it's possible that you had sex and then ovulated days later. You then have to account for how long it takes the egg to implant which varies from person to person.

I would assume the feeling funny last week was implantation. I always feel very weird at the time of implantation. Dizzy, spaced out, hot, bit sort of sea sicky I suppose. I then test positive a few days later.

Make an appointment and find out if you need the pessaries.

Congratulations!

BusyBee24 · 20/10/2015 10:31

Thanks ShowofHands so very helpful to come on here and get some support particularly when I don't feel I want to tell any close friends or family at this point - they all went through a lot with my miscarriages!

Who would you make an apt with - GP? or IVF providers? They haven't seen me since early last year?

x

Can you get an appointment with GP and/or the EPU (they can take two separate blood samples to measure progesterone levels to soo if increase indicates its viable) or ring your old fertility specialist.

I know 5 women who have had Ivf for the first, then conceived naturally for the second.

minimalistaspirati0ns · 20/10/2015 10:35

Blood tests will indicate if progesterone is increasing at right level. May offer you early scan also

GlitteryClitoris · 20/10/2015 10:35

Hello - yes make an appointment with you GP as soon as possible. Ask them to take a blood test to confirm. You could also take a clearblue digi test in a few days once your HCG has built up some more.

Also ask them to prescribe you some progesterone supps - they wont hurt to take them if you don't need them.

Congratulations :) x

BusyBee24 · 20/10/2015 10:38

I think I will maybe go and get another couple of tests just to make sure - would feel a right wally if it was a duff test!!

If those tests are positive I'll ring GP if went to EPU wouldn't even be able to tell them how far along I am?

Don't even know how to work that out with my ridiculous cycles!

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 20/10/2015 10:39

I'd ring your IVF clinic for advice now and I'd also make a GP appointment for asap. That way, the clinic can give you specific advice and if you require tests or referrals to the EPU, you can go the the GP knowing what to ask for. Or the IVF clinic might be able to refer you and then all you have to do is cancel the appointment with the GP if you find you don't need it.

BusyBee24 · 20/10/2015 10:40

Thanks everyone off to buy "a few" more PG tests!

Will then try and make an appt with my GP who is super lovely!

Keep telling myself not to panic if it is meant to be it will be.

KitKat1985 · 20/10/2015 11:39

Could you post a pic of your pregnancy test? But if you are unsure maybe try a digital test as well for clarity?

But yes, if positive, I'd make an appointment with your GP.

ShowOfHands · 20/10/2015 12:32

KitKat, the op did a digital test. Smile

KitKat1985 · 20/10/2015 12:34

Ahh sorry, I misread. Smile

BusyBee24 · 20/10/2015 13:43

Thanks all avoided going to the loo for 2 1/2 hrs bought a CB digi and a poundworld cheap test just done both and got 100% negatives on both.

No sign of a line at all.

Surely if I was pregnant there would at least be a faint line?

Driving me mad!

OP posts:
Runner05 · 20/10/2015 14:38

Cb are well known for not being very sensitive particularly the digi ones so getting a beg on one of those and a positive on the much more sensitive superdrug one isn't that unusual. Was the other cheapy blue ink also? As I understand that the red are better. In addition your levels would be much higher in FMU.

The best ones to try are superdrug own or first response. Both are much more sensative and reliable than cb.

You're not out of the running yet, my advice would be, get yourself a first response and test in the morning x

BusyBee24 · 20/10/2015 14:43

Thanks Runner and everyone for your responses really need you right now!

Not going to tell anyone as feel I might be a bit crazy - if it wasn't for the fact that I used a digi this morning I would be thinking I was crazy and seeing lines that weren't there!

Used a FRER this afternoon as well definitely no line but will have to play the waiting game until the morning!

Anyone heard of anyone getting a false positive on a superdrug digital?

Also it is 23 days since we last DTD surely it should be showing up at any time of the day if I am PG?

OP posts:
Runner05 · 20/10/2015 15:20

Not heard of that no, in theory false positive isn't possible.

I've heard people on here say they've gone weeks after af was due before getting a positive. I think it's different for everyone.

Even if you don't get a positive tomorrow it couldn't hurt to have an appointment with go.

Try tomorrow morning again and see what happends.

ShowOfHands · 20/10/2015 16:45

False positives are possible but rare. The reasons for false positives should be detailed in the instructions, plus you can get faulty tests. Again, rare.

It could be a number of things. You could have a faulty test, you could be pregnant and it's early days, though the time between sex and now is quite long for that to be the case. You could be experiencing a chemical pregnancy. There is also the outside possibility that it's a non-viable pregnancy and in that case, there would be a chance it is ectopic. It's unlikely of course, but do keep an eye on how you are feeling. Any pain, strange discharge or bleeding, feeling unwell and so on, I'd see somebody and explain you've had a mix of positive and negative tests, a long cycle and you are having symptoms.

Otherwise, time is your friend as frustrating as that is. Wait until tomorrow or even a couple of days after that and test again.

What a confusing and frustrating time for you.

LondonGirl83 · 20/10/2015 16:51

I agree-- its most likely too early or a fading chemical pregnancy. Test with FMU in a day or so if AF still hasn't arrived. Fingers crossed for you!

BusyBee24 · 20/10/2015 18:49

Thanks guys!

Annoyingly AF not arriving is not much of an indicator for me since I can have 80+ day cycles!

Just did another test - BFN - how did I get on this train again!

Due to the fact it is 24 days since BD I am starting to think it's a negative but then how on earth did I get a false positive on a digi this morning?

Will check with FMU to be sure.

OP posts:
minimalistaspirati0ns · 20/10/2015 19:08

Don't drink much tonight and use first morning urine. Not all positives show positives. Some positives are negatives.

BusyBee24 · 20/10/2015 19:18

Will do!

Have you heard of anyone getting a false positive on a superdrug digi? I could understand if it was a normal stick test it could be an evap etc but thought a digi would be right at least!

Will see what tomorrow brings!

OP posts:
BusyBee24 · 21/10/2015 07:11

FRER with FMU and BFN!!

Grrrr I literally have no idea what is going on now!

OP posts:
KitKat1985 · 21/10/2015 09:02

Sorry you are going through this BusyBee.

I think possibly the most likely explanations at this stage are:

  1. A faulty superdrug digital test (rare but not impossible).
  2. A chemical pregnancy / very early miscarriage.

Could you make an appointment with your GP for clarification?

BusyBee24 · 21/10/2015 09:08

I think you're right KitKat.

Have a pre arranged appt with the nurse this morning so going to change it into an "Am I pregnant?" chat!

Think the most likely explanation must be faulty test. If chemical would expect at least a sniff of a line on the other tests done so soon after the positive digi.

All very strange! And massively frustrating when you never expected to conceive naturally!

Bloods taken - the waiting game continues!
