Positive ovulation tests but negative pregnancy tests?!?!

Hiya, in the last 2 weeks I have been taking ovulation tests and pregnancy tests. At the beginning of the two weeks the ovulation tests were positive so I assumed I was ovulating. I then waited a week and did a pregnancy test and it came out negative. I did another ovulation test on the 9th October and it was positive and did another yesterday and it was positive, did one this morning and it was negative! I'm sure I've already ovulated and my period isn't due until the 18th. Does anyone know what this means?! Help!! So Confused! :(

Has the test line on all you ovulation tests been as dark as the control line? It has to be to be positive - one reason why the Clearblue ovulation predictor with the smiley face is a good one to use is that you know by whether the face is flashing (approaching peak fertility) or fixed (peak ovulation reached) tells you whether your hormones are right levels to trigger ovulation. The only certain way to know a cycle has achieved ovulation is by d21 progesterone levels and, at your age, you wouldn't be offered blood tests on the NHS until you've been ttc for at least 12 months.

OP you can't be sure you've ovulated by an OPK. OPK's only tell you that your LH levels have risen enough to a level to trigger ovulation, not that you actually have. Also when it's positive doesn't mean you're ovulating right then, it means any time 12-48 hours.

Taking your temperature (BBT) can indicate that you've ovulated, but again doesn't mean an egg was released, just that your body has decided that that was it's attempt. As Rememberallball said above, "The only certain way to know a cycle has achieved ovulation is by d21 progesterone levels and, at your age, you wouldn't be offered blood tests on the NHS until you've been ttc for at least 12 months"

Also, I know three months feels like a long time but it's not really. Some people get lucky and get pregnant quickly, but you need to remember you have a 2 day window and then a 20% chance during that 2 day window. "Normal" is around 12 months, so you'd still be in the "lucky" frame in anything under that.

I've been trying for 9 cycles (since Jan 2015). I came off Implanon in March 2014 to give myself time to normalise. Here we are, months later, still nothing and all test results have come back "normal" so far.

The lines at the beginning of the time where I started taking the ovulation tests were quite dark, but they got lighter and lighter gradually. I was really worried about it, but from what everyone's said on here, it's normal what I'm going through? I'm just going mad hoping right now! :(

Hi Stacie, an opk is only positive when both lines are equally dark. If one line is lighter than the other, it's not positive.

StacieRalphes · 13/10/2015 23:21

Ah right okay! I did read the instructions that came with them & they didn't say anything about the lines being equally dark. Thank you for that, makes more sense now!

Just to clarify what Hamsolo said, the test line is the one that needs to be darker than the control line. Only then is it "positive".

I've attached 2 pictures to show you an example. As you can see from the pics, in the "week 4" top picture, the test line almost looks as dark as the control line but not quite. This would mean the LH is either increasing (so ovulation soon so DTD) or LH decreasing. In this case the person knew they'd had a positive the day before (see last picture on week 3) so it means decreasing in their case.

Hope that helps!
