Vasectomy Reversal

So the other half and I are thinking about having a reversal. Not a topic normally spoken about between friends and just wondering if anyone has gone through this and can say how it was. Talk through the process and what we should expect from initial consultation through to fingers crossed getting pregnant. I am feeling a bit lost as I don't know too much about the topic. Can anyone give any positive personal experiences preferably within th UK? Or is anyone else going through this now?

This thread went quiet, but might be worth a read

Key factor seems to be how long since the op - less time the better, though there have been successes even after years.

And when choosing a provider, do ask about success rates specifically in terms of resulting pregnancies, not just presence of sperm in semen.

Hi MrsG14, I'm on the above thread, some nice stories if you have time to read through it. We had appointments with a few surgeons first and chose the one we felt most comfortable with. Just message if you have any questions, have you started looking into surgeon yet?

We have an appointment booked at our local bmi hospital next week so fingers crossed we like him as he will be our closest and not sure my other half wants to have lots of different meetings he's more of a right lets get going kinda guy :-)

I can second the recommendation to read that thread linked above, I learned a lot from there.

We had a reversal 12 years post-vasectomy. It was a complete success, DHs SA results were higher than the average normal result! However, we have been ttc for over 2 years since and no luck. I have problems, which is most likely the issue although there's a chance DH's fertility may have dropped off too. We'll find out when we go to the fertility clinic.

In terms of the procedure - it went very well. Poor DH was rather bruised and swollen afterwards, but he was fine.

Good luck OP

Ah thank you will keep my fingers crossed for you. May I ask what DH is short for? I just can't work that one out. Did you see many surgeons before hand or did you stick with your first one?

DH = 'Dear Husband' - very twee, but it's the accepted terminology here!

No we didn't see any other surgeons, but I just did a lot of research online before choosing. It's difficult though, because obviously they're all going to claim great results etc. I just picked one I felt most comfortable with in the end, and he was great.

scaevola · 16/10/2015 22:30

It 's not necessarily 'dear'. D is a very useful letter, can also stand for dratted, dickbrained, dastardly etc.

And really it's just MN community slang for a husband, with no literal meaning attached. This site really isn't twee (5 minutes on Active will show that v clearly).

Hiya :) I was the OP on that thread, have name changed now :) We went with Dr Alan Eaton at BMI Sandringham. My DH's op was successful despite a lot of damage done during the original procedure. We had approx 50% chance of the op being successful and resulting in pregnancy. I fell pregnant 15 days after the op and gave birth to our son 9 months after his op was carried out!
My DH had his vasectomy done 5 years before the reversal and had been done by burning the tubes rather than tying. This reduced our chances of success. The oriinal Dr had damaged one testicle too by burning all thw way to the testicle itself. Success rates go down after 5 years but as you can see from someone above, it can be much longer and still be successful.
I'm not sure if the following worked, or if it was coincidence or sheer luck (DD1 was unplanned, DD2 took 10 months to conceive) but 2 months before I knew we were going to be trying, I stopped the pill (was only on it to regulate my hormones) and starting taking Pregnacare to make sure I had the relevant vitamins etc. I also started temping and tracking my cycles etc to give me an idea of when my fertile times would be etc. I got DH on Wellman Conception tabs around October too. I figured that the sperm production would be 'out of practice' so these might help get things back in good condition again. DH had the op on December 5th. He was made to rest for the first week, spending most of that time on the sofa (which he didn't mind too much ha ha!). He made sure everything was 'plumbed correctly' on day 12 and we were naughty and started ttc on day 13. We also used Balance-Activ sperm friendly gel too just to give the guys a helping hand! Our little boy, DC3, was born on September 4th.
If I can be of any help, give me a shout :)

Hi There,

I was wondering if you can share the name / location of your surgeon?
We are currently looking at this option and there is so many adverts out there
