BBT query!

Hi there,

V. new to this, started TTC#1 this cycle. Checked my BBT for the first time this morning (CD19) and it's 36.0, which is pretty low I think?

We DTD during my fertile window (based on calendar and EWCM) - CD11, CD13 and CD15 - but I'm thinking a BBT of 36.0 at this stage (post-ov, pre-period) means almost certainly not pregnant. In fact it seems to be the lowest it can be without being abnormal! Of course it's only our first proper 'try' but I am a bit of a symptom-spotter and have been waiting to start ttc for so long, so already a tad paranoid! Any real chance I'm wrong, and could still have conceived? Cycles normally regular 26-28 days, though took a wrong turning last time and AF arrived on CD16!

Any insight very much appreciated (if you've made it this far) Smile Xx

I've had 35.32! I've had two 35s this cycle and a 36.92 temp. Bizarre!

My temps are around 36 so I wouldnt worry about that. There's not much point in just taking the odd temperature here and there, you need to do it every day and plot it, I use fertilityfriend.com, so that you can see what's normal for you and see trends in the temps. Fertility Friend will analyse the data and tell you when you ovulated, it also has lots of info and tips and tells you how to temp correctly e.g. it needs to be after at least 3 hours sleep and the first things you do when you wake, before you even get out of bed.

36oC is low for the second part of your cycle. But if you have just started this am, it's very difficult to say anything more than that.
BBT are great to know when you are (and IF) you are ovulation get too. But you really need a full cycle of measurements to do that.
In effect, just that measurement doesn't mean a lot!

I agree about being very careful
About the condition of taking your temp. Small things like having a bad night sleep will ale a difference. So try to take it always at the same time and take note of any unusual events.

Btw stress can have a big impact on periods incl making them shorter. So again I wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks all - yes I've only just decided to start temping, so don't have any sort of pattern to assess yet. Was just a bit disappointed that a 36 at this point means probably not pregnant this time (silly I know, given that we could have a long road ahead!).

One thing I've just learned (mascara this might help you too) - temping orally can often give lower BBTs than temping vaginally. Obviously it's important not to mix oral and vaginal temps in the same cycle, but it might be worth switching once you start your next chart. Vaginal is often a little more accurate too, especially if there's a chance you sleep with your mouth open (sexy stuff!). I've signed up to Fertility Friend now so will be interesting to see how the graph goes!

Actually the temperature itself doesn't mean anything. It's the increase in torts tire and then
The drop in temp that indicates ovulation and then the coming period. Because it's relative to
All the other temperatures you have taken, you can't really say anything about it with just one number.

Elizarome · 29/09/2015 11:11

True - 36 could be high for me, you never know! Smile

Which thermometer do you have? I don't think the cheapy ones they sell on Amazon are all that accurate. You need to do a whole month so that you can see your sustained rise after ov. A single temp is meaningless and don't read too much into what the temps are either (unless you're going to invest a bit more money in a decent accurate thermometer) it's the pattern that's important.
