Hi all

I am completely new to this so bear with me.

My OH and I have been ttc for 2 years now, he was of the opinion of "if it happens it happens" I was more concerned so made us go for tests. His came back all good which he of course felt fabulous about. So far I have had 3 sets of blood tests, all of which it would appear have been done at the wrong time, I have had an external and internal scan which came back showing small cysts but nothing to worry about. I have been told I need to loose weight and have a procedure where they inject some dye and have the blood tests done again.

I'm at a point where I don't really know what will happen next and I could really do with some friendly words to help me understand what the next few stages will be and if everything carries on coming back clear and negative then what does that mean?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Your story sounds familiar! My DH wanted yo take the 'let's wait and see when it happens' approach but we went for tests just under 2 years in. He was ok, I've had a few lots of bloods (taken at the wrong time, and lost by one clinic!) showing no ov. An ultrasound revealed PCOS and a HSG, where they injected dye to check tubes and ovaries, was normal. I assume it's the HSG you're having when you mention the dye test?

I met up with a consultant at the hospital who believes I'm not ovulating due to the bloods (despite me explaining that the day 21 test is far too early for my cycle) She put me on Metformin last October for 6 months alongside a contraceptive pill called Dianette to regulate my cycle, and encourage ov. I also have weight to lose and she wanted me to lose weight whilst taking these meds in the hope that the combo would help.

I feel stupid now but I didn't try to lose weight at the time and whilst my AF became a 28 day cycle, it became much longer again as soon as I stopped the pill. They believe I'll need Clomid so I'm currently losing weight before my next appointment in November as I need to get my BMI under 30 to get Clomid. If you're over the guidelines I'd strongly suggest starting to lose weight now as it will increase waiting times even further if not as it has done for me.

As for what happens next, the HSG will show whether your uterus and tubes are healthy / unblocked etc and the bloods are of course supposed to make sure all the hormones needed to ov are there. Do you know how long your cycles laSt, are they regular? If so you should tell the Gp/hospital/clinic you go to for the bloods to see if they'll allow you to have them done on the cycle day that's best for you, not just the standard day 21. Assuming everything comes back normal, they may suggest you lose weight or go to some form of treatment, though I'm unsure what as I haven't got as far as clomid/ IVF etc.

Sorry for the mega post, just don't seem to come across too many people who gave been in a similar situation so wanted to give as much info as possible. Try not to worry. It's taking longer for me too due to the PCOS but hopefully you'll be fine x

Hi mrsc2013
Thank you for your reply. we seem to be on a very similar path. My cycle is 32 days so they have said getting my BMI to 28 will hopefully sort that and bring it to a normal cycle length. So I have to loose 2 stone in 15 weeks!! 4lbs off so far and only 2 weeks in. Clomid hasn't been mentioned yet but they do believe that I am ovulating but sporadically, maybe once every 3 months or so. I'm having HSG in October so hopefully that will give me some answers.

I assume from what you've said, they've told you to go away and lose weight and have the HSG in the meantime to check tubes/ uterus? If so, that's exactly what happened with me. NHS following standard procedure there

Well done on your loss so far! 32 still isn't too bad, but they do like it to be 28 days don't they! I'm sure you can lose 2 stone if you continue at that rate. Best of luck with it. The HSG should hopefully give you some answers too. I kind of expected something to be wrong with mine, just to explain why ttc hadn't worked, but they were fine. This is of course the best news but I just wanted (and still want) a definitive answer as to what's wrong. They had been hoping the weight loss would regulate things for me but it hasn't so far. I've got more to lose than you though and a much longer cycle to start with, so I don't want to scare you off. I hope that everything works out for you.

Welshbeaut · 03/10/2015 18:24

Well I had my HSG on Wednesday and all clear. I'm the same thought, I just want a definitive reason as to why there is still no baby. So I've now got until 15th December to lose this weight. Best get a wriggle on.

I know how you feel. I've recently started worrying that something else may be wrong that I don't know about as I ov'd last month but didn't get pg, which may have just been one of those things but as it's been such a struggle so far, I'm kinda expecting other issues to arise. Hopefully not though!

You can do it! You'll never have a better motivation than having your baby. The way I see it too is that if I do end up needing medication or IVF etc, you have to be under a certain BMI too, so may as well lose it now in case. You know what I always found strange, I was told to try to lose enough weight to get my BMI to 30 in 4 months, which was 3.5 stone for me! Doctors would never normally recommend losing so much in a short space of time, so I always wondered how they could. FX for you that the weight loss regulates your cycle and you get a BFP x
