Putting things on hold because you are TTC??

Hey everyone,

My husband and I have only just started trying to conceive for the first time and I'm supposed to be doing one of those 26 mile charity night walks in just over a week which I signed up for ages ago. If I ovulate on time then the walk would be a few days after that, I'm worried in case I do become pregnant straight away and the walk causes any problems before I can test (I appreciate it would be extremely early!). I can do long walks about 14 miles no problem but have never done one this long before.

It would be great to get other people's thoughts on how to approach things like this when TTC, do you put things on hold or just go for it until you know for sure? Some things I have read when googling suggest that anything that affects the embryo at such an early stage tends to have an "all or nothing" reaction- have other people been told this is the case? I'm not drinking, smoking or drinking coffee etc.

Would really appreciate any thoughts, and also wanting to just say hi as I'm new on here :-)

I've been thinking about this myself Rose286, although more in terms of booking flights and things. In the end I decided that it might take months to get pregnant and I can't just sit in the house and do nothing so best go ahead as normal until I know otherwise. Also the doc told me that if you're pretty fit and healthy already then you should keep doing exercise (although I appreciate 26miles is a bit out of the ordinary!). Good luck if you do decide to go for it, sounds like a great thing to do!

You can't put things off for what could be months. And the more you put things off the more noticeable ttc will be for you and the more you may come to resent and worry etc.

The month I got my bfp I'd gone out clubbing twice, gone rock climbing and hiking, had a job interview, a number of long drives and visiting a dying relative. If you're going to get a bfp, it will happen.

VicA - that month we were also going to book a holiday but I decided to wait until my period made an appearance, and was then going to book it for 6 months later. As it turned out my period never came and I was glad I didn't book it, Peru at 7months pregnant does not sound appealing right now!

WhoTheFIsJeff · 18/09/2015 19:23

No I didn't put anything on hold. I ate and drank as I normally would and did whatever I normally would. TTC can take months so I don't see the point of putting your life on hold before you start. I can't see why you wouldn't do the walk.

Oysterbabe · 18/09/2015 19:44

The walk would do absolutely no harm if you were pregnant.

SockQueen · 18/09/2015 19:50

If you're already fit enough to tackle the walk, then you're unlikely to do any harm by doing it. It's not a huge physiological strain anyway. And it's only your first month!

Glad I didn't put too much on hold whilst TTC or I'd have missed a year of holidays, activities, etc...

TheOddity · 18/09/2015 19:51

Don't put anything on hold, and stop viewing it as trying to conceive. View it as what will be will be. I wouldn't even track ovulation if I were you, unless you know you have conception risks. In my opinion, the biggest barriers to getting pregnant if there are no existing problems are not having enough sex all the way through the month, and not relaxing about it. Just have lots of sex, live your life and give it a year. If it hasn't happened by then, you can start tracking etc.

Rose2806 · 22/09/2015 09:52

Thanks everyone- this definitely put my mind at ease and after more research as well I'm going ahead with the walk :-) will let you know how it goes!

Definitely don't put things on hold!! I did just that. I wanted to do a charity 13 mile walk but opted not to 'just in case'. I would have done race for life this year but again, opted not to. I would have been going abroad for my holiday but opted not to so booked a hotel in the UK.

13 months down the line we have just been referred to a fertility clinic and I could have done everything I wanted to do this year.

JellyBaby26 · 23/09/2015 15:31

Agree with Junosmum. Don't put things off as its fairly likely you won't get a bfp first time round and it will get you down, so you should keep yourself busy.

Also the walk wouldn't cause any problems if you were pregnant? Its good to exercise!

sophied1983 · 23/09/2015 20:13

Carry on with your life as planned until you know otherwise.

My mum did one of those 26 mile charity walks with undiagnosed cancer - which shows anything is possible with grit and determination.

Life's not worth waiting around for anything in my opinion!

Kaytee1987 · 24/09/2015 11:55

I think it takes a fertilised egg 6 days until it implants after ovulation anyway. I don't think a long walk would cause a miscarriage. Just listen to your body, if you feel completely knackered then stop or rest a while xx

Rose2806 · 24/09/2015 16:44

Yeah I was just a bit worried as all the books say to exercise but not exhaust yourself, but I will take it steady and rest well before and after :-) Well done to your mum Sophie. I have been wanting to do the walk for ages so determined to finish it and raise as much as possible! Thanks for the advice everyone xx

I wanted to go to Peru for my honeymoon but didn't want to go while pregnant. I would have been 21 weeks.
I lost the baby and now am stuck with a cottage close to home for a week. I wish I just booked peru

Rose2806 · 28/09/2015 09:52

Sorry to hear that Chelle, hope you get some good news again soon.

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement, I did the walk, which was really tough but very pleased to have completed it! Typically I ovulated late and got a positive opk when I got home in the morning, don't think I could have had any less energy!
