Has anyone had one?

I'm booked in for one later this month after being referred to a gynaecologist by my GP due to very painful periods, to rule out endometriosis or ovarian cysts.

Have been TTC since start of the year after coming off the pill after 10years on it. Periods are regular and I ovulate. I'm 27.

The date they've given me though, if I don't get a BFP, AF will be in town and she's usually heavy. Acording to the letter I received, it's fine to have it when on your period.

Has anyone had one and how was it? What was the outcome?

I've had one (different circumstances, it was to diagnose a miscarriage that had already started); it wasn't too bad. It was shaped like a TV wand and they put a sheath-type cover on it so don't worry about AF.

It felt a bit cold from memory and there was a bit of prodding but I didn't find it too uncomfortable. My sonographer was lovely though and she really put me at ease. They leave the room so you can get undressed / dressed (bottom half), and the bed is covered with paper towel which is all wrapped up when you get up so you won't see anything. Depending on the position of your uterus they might give you a cushion to tilt your pelvis. HTH?

Good luck OP and if you do end up having to go, try to keep relaxed (not easy under the circumstances).

I had one due to suspected ectopic pregnancy. Darkened room with a sonographer and the door locked! Took my jeans and knickers off, lay on the bed thing and they put a wedge cushion under my bum and blanket over me. My knees were bent. She then put an extremely long and thin dildo ( for want of a better description) up my floozy. It was covered in a latex sheath, like a really really thick condom.

Didn't take long, wiggled it around a bit, at some points it was touching my cervix which was uncomfortable but not painful. She could see my tubes and ovaries very clearly. I got the all clear for an ectopic but saw a jelly beans with a flashing white heart!

The probe was covered in the gel they use for ultrasounds, acts as a conducer and a lubricant, was a bit cold but ok. I didn't bleed after.

Oh, and you don't need to have a full bladder, which is good, coz it made me want to pee!

The wand used to do such scans was lubricated and that felt a bit cold. It was not a painful procedure though and they could see the ovaries and uterine cavity quite clearly.

If endometriosis is present (and this is often a cause of ongoing very painful periods) such a scan will not readily detect endometriosis. I have had more of these types of scans than I care to mention and not one saw it (the endometricial deposits are that small).

That's good to hear it doesn't hurt. I had a second smear last week and that was a bit painful - first smear a few years ago was fine though.

Interesting about the endometriosis not being detected Attila.

Juno the long a thin dildo description. made me chuckle.

Thanks Qwerty that sounds like what I expected but the pillow sounds like a good idea. What's HTH?

Thanks

I had one. It's painless. I had ovarian cysts which were discovered and then were then removed by keyhole surgery.

SnozzberryPie · 06/09/2015 09:48

I've had a few during pregnancy for various different reasons. It's fine - I find smears quite uncomfortable but the scans aren't.

PotteringAlong · 06/09/2015 09:48

HTH = hope that helps

Sunshinegirl2015 · 06/09/2015 09:56

Thanks pottering I thought I'd learnt all the acronyms!

Gooorooo doctor did say it could be cysts. It's amazing what they can do these days!

Snozz thanks it's good to know they're not painful at least. When I had the smear the nurse kept telling me to relax and untense but it's hard when you know what's coming lol.

Sorry sunshinegirl I should have typed it out instead of being lazy Grin. It's nothing like a smear; I find them pretty uncomfortable too.

Sunshinegirl2015 · 17/09/2015 11:44

Had my scan. A bit uncomfortable as AF arrived the day before the scan but overall wasn't too bad. Much more comfortable than a smear. Scan lasted about 15mins.

Ovaries and uterus are fine but she said there was a lot of fluid in my pelvis which she's going to flag to my GP who I'm seeing next week to discuss the results.

She said the scan couldn't detect endometriosis and so the fluid could be due to that or could be something else.

Had a smear two weeks ago which came back all clear.

I'll see what my GP says next week.
