Not eligible for NHS....now what?

We conceived DD (nearly two) through the NHS. I have PCO and we were very lucky and Clomid worked first time for us.

We haven't used any protection since, other than breastfeeding for the first year.

I know the awfulness of desperately wanting your first DC and I know we are so lucky to have her, and if we only have one I can make peace, but we are starting to seriously want a sibling for her and I'm having NO periods. Zero. This is worse than before I had DD when I was at least having one every other month.

GP referred us to fertility place again and they sent a letter today saying that as we have DD (and I am eternally grateful for this) we won't be eligible for any help for number two. Although I understand I'm really gutted.

I know it won't happen naturally so....what next? How much are we looking at for private help? We tried for over two years for DD so I think if it exists we've tried it but open to any suggestions.

I have a 'normal' BMI, DH sperm count is fine and lap and dye when trying for DD showed everything fine other than cysts on ovaries (obvs)

Sorry I have no idea how much it would cost.

The best thing to do would be to ask for quotes from private fertility clinics. Given your history they may be able to estimate a time frame and cost - or at least let you know all your options.

Alternatively there is adoption... good luck!

yallahabibi · 14/08/2015 07:27

Not in the UK but you can definitely buy clomid over the counter here . Can you get it online and repeat the dosage you used for the first conception ?

eurochick · 14/08/2015 07:31

You're looking at around 200 quid per appointment. Maybe 150. Plus the cost of drugs and blood tests.

EllaMenoPea · 14/08/2015 19:29

Thanks. I still have left over Clomid in date but I'm not having periods so would need to have one started for me + the scans.

I promised myself I wouldn't get het up about fertility again Angry

Just asked my friend and her most recent (and successful :) ) round of IVF was £6000 - her eggs and OHs sperm but they did have 'immune' issues, which I don't fully understand.

wonderpants · 14/08/2015 20:10

Would your GP not prescribe clomid? I never had any scans with it!

EllaMenoPea · 14/08/2015 20:14

They're saying that as we already have a child we're not eligible for any help. I've made an appointment to get referred for private so can possibly talk through it then.

£6000?! Ouch!

If we didn't have DD then adoption would have been on the cards but as we, thankfully, do I think we will go as far as we can afford with fertility treatments and then stop.

Go to your drs and ask them to prescribe you noristephene..Take that for 2 weeks it will make you have a period and then take your clomid.
You don't have to be scanned.

Cycle tracking is 275 at my clinic.

EllaMenoPea · 14/08/2015 20:27

Thank you Vixx!!

The 6k quoted above is for ivf, which will be more expensive than Clomid + scans. Contact some local private clinics and describe your previous treatment and ask them for typical costs.

Have you talked to your GP about your lack of periods? Are you having zero periods, or infrequent? Is there a reason why your pics would have worsened e.g. gaining weight? Your GP May organise some tests from a medical (not fertility) perspective e.g. thyroid, if it isn't clearly attributable to your pcos.

EllaMenoPea · 14/08/2015 20:46

I spoke to my GP but he just attributed it to the PCOS. I will express my concern at my appointment.

No weight gain, still a BMI of around 22.

I'm having no periods, I will occasionally have a bleed for about a day but no actual period. I am having pre menstrual symptoms but then nothing appears.

I'm in my 20's as well so unlikely to be down to menopause (I hope!!)

Will try that Alpaca.

I can't understand why I've never been prescribed progesterone before?

You should get investigations for amenorrhea though, separate to any fertility desires, so push for that as might answer some of the same questions.

Bugsylugs · 14/08/2015 21:19

Ideally if have PCOS should have four bleeds a year.
Your GP may help however as it requires private treatment in your area should be the same with GP.
Definitely should have scans as risk of overstimulation with clomid. Would suggest contacting private clinics for costs.
Amennorhea does not need investigating for 6 months probably no need in OPs situation however any fertility tests that need doing should still be done on NHS as per NICE unless your local CCG has excluded them. Look for their fertility policy. If in West Mids they are covered

EllaMenoPea · 19/08/2015 15:11

Saw GP yesterday and he wasn't hugely concerned about the current lack of periods as there is already a PCO diagnosis.

He suggested having one private appointment and seeing if they will just 'give' me a period and clomid with scans or if they want to start from the beginning again as he may be able to investigate further without classing it as 'fertility issues'.
