Didn't really know where to put this, but hope someone can shed some light. A friend's midwife is telling her that because she already has 2 boys, there is a 75% chance that her 3rd baby will also be a boy. As I also have 2 boys and am planning a 3rd, I would be really interested to know if there is a proven statistical basis to this! It wouldn't affect the decision, just interested to know the odds!

Hello, just thought I'd crash to say I am pretty sure that we had one boy then one girl due to timing of intercourse.

I read into the theory of timing intercourse before we tried for number 2, Our first born was a boy, we "did it" day 14. No.2 We tried days 10-12 inclusive and hey presto a girl......two days before ovulation to improve your chances of a girl.

Now I am not stupid and I know full well that it could of been a complete fluke, but I believe the theory may have worked for us.

I will explain the theory if you want me to, but it is long winded and I'm sure most of you will know it already.

Best of luck to you all. I am currently pg with no.3. This one will be pot luck. "did it days 13-16.

Frenchsmallfry · 16/11/2006 14:04

Oppppps. Sooooo sorry, notquitecockney has already explained the theory of the male spem swim fast, female sperm last long etc........ So no need for me to.

That'll teach me for not reading the whole of a thread before I post. sorry

PrettyCandles · 16/11/2006 14:16

Slightly more boys are born than girls, but the world's population has slightly more females than males because male mortality rate is higher than female.

In times of war, apparently more boys are born than females.

Some families do have genetic tendency to have one gender, but I don't think there's any way of predicting whether you have inherited that tendency - short of having a dozen cdhildren!

LadyTophamHatt · 16/11/2006 14:25

IMO having sex before/during ovultion to have a particular gender is crap.

I'd be Pg with a girl if it was correct.
I have 3 boys all conceieved between days 12-16 of 28 day cycle.
Our 4th boy will be here in january.....to say it was a surpirse to find myself PG again would be an understatment, especially as conception was on day 8 !!!

bloodbloodeverywhere · 16/11/2006 14:30

DHs brother in law comes from a family that hasn't had any boys for 4 generations.

buktus · 16/11/2006 14:33

i had 3 boys and then a girl

NotQuiteCockney · 16/11/2006 14:38

No, not a biologist, just someone who reads a lot.

Um, bloodbloodeverywhere, I'm worried about your husband's brother-in-law. Is he himself not male?

throckenholt, it makes sense that maybe diabetics would produce more "girl" sperm, as I bet their seminal fluid isn't quite right, and probably not the best environment for pathetic weak boy sperm ...

The "date of intercourse" thing is obviously just a matter of probabilities. Ovulation can move about, and maybe there's just one unusually hardy boy sperm kicking about, or a girl sperm who can swim really fast. It does only take one ...

JoolsToo · 16/11/2006 14:39

I had girl, boy, boy

does that help?

probably not

mears · 16/11/2006 14:54

I think the midwife is talking rubbish TBH. There are far too many variables to make a prediction. FWIW, I have 3 boys then a girl.

Frenchsmallfry · 16/11/2006 15:42

I agree NQC, I am absolutly spot on with my cycle. I still believe it worked for us but your body has got to be doing the right things at the right time. You can not count on anything to work, what you get is what you get.

However the theory has some facts in it, is logical but like most things all factors have to be present. If someone has 2 boys and desparately wants a girl, knows their body clock very well, then no harm can come from giving it a try, Surely!!!

Babymad2DS · 16/11/2006 15:55

It's always 50/50 also, It's upto the mans sperm never the woman's egg, X and Y and all that!

I am 1 of 10, I am the first 25 yrs, then I have 8 (21yrs 19yrs 17yrs 16yrs 14yrs 12yrs 11yrs and 9yrs) brothers, than finished off with my little sister 3 yrs old. I have 2 DS but DH would like a girl I've told him a baby is a baby, and I'm not getting into this like my mother did no way, my mother is a very silly (understatement of the year) woman. My brother's were dragged up, due to my mothers obsession with this whole girl/boy thing, my mother treated my brothers like dirt because they were the less desired sex and THEY KNOW SO, I have been TTC for 17months, and so long for another baby weather it be a girl or boy, I really don't care as long as the baby is healthy. I would love boy just as much as I would love a girl. There was I point a few yrs back that I wanted a girl but my dad died of cancer last year and I now know that all life is a God send.

Babymad2DS · 16/11/2006 16:14

I was reading in a health magazine at the hospital last week, that said, In the last 7 years far more girls were born than boys in the UK, apart from Scotland! In the US far more boys are born than girls! Smokes have more girls than boys! More boys are born in warmer countries!

PeachyClair · 16/11/2006 16:56

I'm sure I read the probability was actually something like 51% boys 49 % girls, this si because of a higher MC / early death (gulp) rate amongst boys and younf males- presumably through war etc.

There are things like cervical mucus, (theoretically also diet) that can affect gender outcome, these are tagain theoretically modifiable.

PeachyClair · 16/11/2006 16:58

(NB my nan ahd 8 boys and 8 girls)

I am pregnant with number three and already have two boys. I looked into this before getting pregnant and I found loads of info saying that you were 85% more likely to have same sex if you already have two the same. I am assuming that I am expecting another boy but will be very happy if I have a girl.

Gobbledigook · 16/11/2006 21:47

Interesting NQC!!

I agree with LTH - by the usual theory of time of conception I should have 3 girls but I don't - I have 3 boys - toptastic!

Gobbledigook · 16/11/2006 21:49

Your 'middle class' theory is interesting NQC - I'd say my experience is the same. I know looooooads of 2 or 3 boy families and hardly any all girl families.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/11/2006 22:27

Oh, I do know one four-girl family. (I also know one four-boy family, one three-boys, one girl, and one four-boy, one girl.) But none of this stuff is 100%, obviously.

Judy1234 · 16/11/2006 23:22

You can gender select if you go abroad for it. I followed a diet to ensure my 3rd child was a boy (he was) but whether that was rubbish and just chance who can say.... Choosing your child through your diet.

throckenholt · 17/11/2006 08:07

In the last 7 years far more girls were born than boys in the UK

interesting - DS1 is in the 5-6 year group - his year has 8 girls and 2 boys. For the next two years there are more boys than girls. So in our area we must be bucking the trend. They are also all bigger year groups than in the past 10 years or so.

Babymad2DS · 17/11/2006 08:14

I know family's with,
4 girls.
2 girls and a boy.
other 2 girls and a boy.
Girl, boy, girl, 2 boys, and a girl.
Girl,boy,girl,boy and than a girl.
Boy, than 4 girls.
2boys and than a girl.
Boy than 2 girls, boy and than another girl.
Than my family, a girl than 8 boys and a girl.
I will have a look at school.........
