Clomid - what to do to get a prescription?

Have posted another recent topic on ttc but have a question about clomid. It took 2 years plus to conceive our dd, who is now 2.5. We are now 37 and I have not been on contraception since I gave birth (and for three years before that!). What would clomid do - would it increase our chances? When do doctors prescribe it?

You need to determine exactly what factors are preventing conception from taking place. It may be that there is a subfertility problem with either yourself, your man or both of you. Therefore both of you should be tested further.

I would seek out a referral from your GP to see a gynae at a subfertility unit. You need a diagnosis of the problem/s first and foremost. It may be that clomid may be advised, it may not. Clomid is often given to women when there are ovulatory problems but it is not always suitable for all women with such problems to take.

It is used to help women to ovulate and also to increase Luteal (sp?) phase.

If you google it you will find out a lot more, my doctor is not allowed to precribe it without authorisation from the fertility clinic, it is common for it to be used as a first stage of fertility drugs.

Have you had a HSG or lap and dye? If you do ovulate and have a LP of 10 days or more i would say that you would not be given clomid - have you had any blood tests?

Had lap and dye and all the other tests last time round. Have not been back yet, though as noted have not been on contraception for best part of six years and have only had one pregnancy (luckily successful) in that time. Could be my age (am now just 37) of course. My own charting has shown potential probs with luteal phase (LP) that I was going to get investigated last time round but then I got pregnant! My LP is no more than 12 days at best and possibly less; I estimate that I ovulate around day 15 and my periods start (usually) on day 26. Obviously when I have good months (a 28 day cycle) I might have more chance of conceiving then!

Natty - sorry read your post v quickly and missed the bit about 10-day LPs - so is a 10-day LP long enough or not considered a cause for concern?? If so, then maybe I'm worrying about nothing and need to just get down to things!

It takes 7-10 DPO for implation to occur so 10 days is okay, any less is wortht looking into. So you should be fine. x

Hi - it has been very quiet on here recently. I've been in a bit of a quandry as I came on yesterday but really really lightly - almost just like discharge with blood [sorry if tmi] Because I am supposed to start my magic pills on day two I didn't know what to do. Anyway I rang GP and he said any blood is AF, which kind of contadicts what I thought because I've always waited for heavy af to count as day one. What do you clever lot think? Also do I remember correctly that it is best to take them just before bed? Help me

chandellina · 24/11/2006 16:23

hi, i dont' know what you ended up doing but my doctor says first day of af is red and heavy blood and i believe that is the most common definition. i took clomid days 2-6, started on second night after full af flow.

Thanks for your thoughts Chand - that's what I would have said too but started them after he said so we''ll see. Feeling quite headachey but only one more to take tonight. Did it work for you?
