Feeling your cervix?

Um.. why.. and how?

We are ttc and I have seen some advice about checking cervix for changes in fertility and ovulation, but I have been for 2 smear tests in my life and both times, legs akimbo for 10 mins for the nurse to actually FIND my cervix. Apparently it is very far back..? So chances of me finding it to feel.. practically zero?

I have no other life experience of my cervix. I wouldn't know where to begin to search.

Have you tried having a good old dig about in there at all? It's much harder to find when ovulating as it rises right up and goes very soft but when AF is due, it is lower and harder (like the tip of your nose)

So generally, does it stay in one place the rest of the time when you're not ovulating? I've felt about in the past, maybe not searching for my cervix, but I don't recall ever feeling something cervix-like.

It also changes position at different times of day. My nurse has had difficulty locating mine sometimes too.

If you only feel for it around ov time then it will be difficult to find as its high. Tmi, but I have found the best position is if you squat down, you can also use your pelvic floor to 'push down' and it will move within reach. You'll know if you've found it as its smooth and everything else in there feels 'ridged'.

Just - why????

Illiria · 26/04/2015 02:49

As a sign of fertility - High, soft and open means ovulating soon. Some people choose not to use temping or opks and use cervical position and cervical mucus instead as a way of tracking fertility. It all depends on how comfortable you are with it.

And to track cervical mucus sometimes you need to collect it from around the cervix.....
The benefits of becoming familiar with the cervix outweigh the gross factor!

Thank you! Does anyone have good experience of finding their own cervix if twice during smears it has taken ages for a nurse to find?

I've never been able to find mine on my own because it's high and tilted (I couldn't even reach to check the strings on my coil).

However, there is nothing to stop you from trying if you want. Wait until your period is due for your first try (cervix will be lower). Make sure your hands are clean, use lots of lube and see how you go.

I'm not sure if I'm pleased or disturbed that there is a Wiki How on how to Feel Your Cervix

You may find this site informative.

bellybuttonfluffy · 26/04/2015 10:47

Shock I wish I didn't just jump right in and look at the photo gallery Pandora. However, that is NOT how I thought a cervix looked! Learn something new everyday Grin

I have no need to do it. No want to do it either Hmm
