does a tilted uterus make it harder to conceive?

Hi all!

I found out last year that my womb was tilted backwards, nurse wasn't too concerned she just said that it made it harder to do a normal ultra sound so i had to have a vaginal one. This was in my first pregnancy last year but i did not make it past 8 weeks so i was keen to try again as soon as my periods came back normally. I've been trying for about 4/5 months now although at first i just thought 'if it happens i happens' but for the past few months i've been trying so hard so i'm wondering whether it is something to do with having a tilted uterus? or whether i was just lucky getting pregnant so quickly the first time maybe it's just taking a little longer but i'll get there eventually.
Just wondering if a tilted uterus is making it harder, is there anything i can do to help get pregnant?
It could possibly be me being impatient as i know i haven't been trying for long compared to others.. just thought it was worth asking to see if there's anything i can do to get my BFP!

Apparently I have a tilted uterus, currently pregnant with dc3, dc1 and dc2 were conceived first month and dc3 took 3 months so in my experience no it hasn't made it hard to conceive

Hi madhie, do sorry to read about your loss last year. Miscarriages are just awful and I know only too well the frustration of taking a while to conceive afterwards.
I too have a tilted uterus. Meaning at smear tests I have to rest my fists under the lower back to tilt it up so the nurse can get to my cervix. Not the comfiest!
It took me a 7 months to fall pregnant again after my first MC but I was told that having a tilted uterus had nothjng to do with that. As sperm will find their way regardless.
Sadly, I lost thag pregnancy too, but decided to try ovulation predictor tests the next time. I fell pregnant first month of trying.
I used the clear blue dugutal ones that are about £30 for a months supply. There's cheaper versions. But maybe tracking and pinpointing the days you're most fertile will help you feel like you're in control a bit more and hopefully get you that BFP in no time.

madgiebean · 08/03/2015 18:40

thank you MotherOf, that's gave me a lot more hope that it will happen soon! congrats on being pregnant!

hi sizethree thank you so much i'm sorry to hear about your MC too. I haven't tried ovulation tests yet i'm pretty regular so i assumed BDing whenever possible would work but of course when you're busy there just isn't always the time. I've heard clearblue ovulation predictors are the best, i think i just dont want to put too much pressure on my partner to have to 'perform' on certain day, although we do most days it just helps to not have the pressure, but after feeling more disappointed than ever this month its something i'm going to try as i've been using calanders but i know they're not the most reliable. Guess its nice having something new to try next month gives me a bit more hope!

Yeh, I wasn't sure about ovulation predictor kits at first as I thought scheduling we'd would be a bit of a passion killer. But I kept getting so disappointed every month that I got a BFN, that if began to feel like TTC was taking over my life.
And the ovulation predictor test showed that I was ovulating later than I thought.
Worth a bash if you fancy a try. See the smiley face is actually a big exciting. And my husband quite liked seeing it in the morning and knowing he'd be in for a treat that evening!

I have a retroverted uterus. Dc1 and Dc2 were conceived 1 cycle. Had a miscarriage that took 4 cycles, then pregnant with dc3 (currently 23w) after 1 cycle.

Siolence · 08/03/2015 19:56

I have a tilted uterus and conceived in 2 months with both. Smears are ghastly though.

BikeRunSki · 08/03/2015 19:57

I have a tilted uterus, and conceived both dc first cycle, at 37 and 40. I'm sorry you are having difficulties, but I don't think a tilted uterus is the cause.

BikeRunSki · 08/03/2015 19:58

Oh yes, smears make me throw up.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 08/03/2015 20:02

Is retroverted when it's backwards? I have that. I have to get smears at the hospital with the person that does the colcoscopy (so?) Been pregnant 3 times. I only have to sit next to a man on a bus.

DancingDinosaur · 08/03/2015 20:04

It didn't make any difference for me. Conceived first cycle both times. Hope you get your bfp soon.

Fakebook · 08/03/2015 20:06

I have a tilted uterus and conceived first time around 7 times (4 miscarriages and 3 children). So no problem conceiving at all.

BCBG · 08/03/2015 20:17

NOTHING to do with it at all as the four DC here prove all too well Grin - Best of luck with conceiving, OP

Siolence · 08/03/2015 22:22

Out of curiousity did anyone else with a tilted uterus have back to back babies? Both of mine were until they turned moments before pushing stage. I've often wondered if there was a connection.

BikeRunSki · 09/03/2015 09:15

DS was undiagnosed b to b footling breech. Delivery by emcs.
DD was b to b breech but turned by 36 weeks. Crash cs for other reasons.

Siolence · 09/03/2015 18:31

Thanks BikeRunSki.

I might start a new thread because I do wonder if there is a connection.

bullseyebraces · 09/03/2015 18:43

I've had two labours. Neither were back to back.

BikeRunSki · 09/03/2015 18:46

I'd never thought of it before, but might be interesting to look into.

ScaryMaryHinge · 09/03/2015 18:49

I have a tilted uterus, smear tests are such fun, and I had a back to back baby, delivered via EMCS. I've never connected the two before.

I did have problems conceiving, but I don't think it was anything to do with the uterus.

Not sure about baby 1 as was quite naieve but I had terrible back labour which makes me think she was back to back. Other two were definitely normal.

I remember the midwife tell me at one of my transvaginal scans that once the weight of the baby gets heavier the uterus "pops forward into normal position" (her words!). So I don't think it remains tilted throughout pregnancy. It probably goes back to the usual tilted position after birth though.

Evizza · 09/03/2015 21:35

I had the smear from hell the other day and was told it was difficult as I have a posterior cervix Confused I am presuming it doesn't affect fertility as I have 3 kids already Smile

sosix · 09/03/2015 21:39

Tiltie here, i have 4 dcs, unassisted.

DramaAlpaca · 09/03/2015 21:48

I have a tilted uterus. It took almost a year to conceive DC1, but DCs 2 & 3 were conceived very quickly. I didn't have any back to back babies and had straightforward deliveries.

Smears can be uncomfortable, but I find if I tell the doctor in advance that I have a retroverted uterus they know to go in at a more comfortable angle, so to speak.

Hope you get your bfp soon, OP.

madgiebean · 09/03/2015 22:30

Thank you ladies!
Glad theres nothing to worry about with a tilted uterus it had been at the back of my mind for a while, hopefully I'll get my BFP soon then! Although I remember being told that before 12 weeks it could cause a lot of back pain having a tilted uterus is this true?? I've always had chronic back pain in my lower back since I was 13 which physio never managed to resolve but I remember having quite bad pain During pregnancy, but always wondered whether a tilted uterus was a contributing factor or whether it wouldn't make a difference? I know it's a symptom of pregnancy just wondered whether it would be more severe? I could imagine if the uterus goes back to its normal position it would cause a lot of pain in the process. Gosh I'm probably thinking way too into this!
