I had an ectopic pregnancy 18 months ago and as a result only have one tube. Had a hysteosalpinogram(xray of the tube left)? other tube blocked not sure how much. Dr wants me to have a lap and dye waiting list ages on Nhs £2000 privatley my dad said he would pay. Not sure whether spend the money on ivf straight away as if they did unblock it would still be at risk of another ectopic not sure if I could cope again. I already have a dd who is 3.6. Feeling stressed everything seems to take ages. I have got age on my side I am 27. Its so frustrating it only took 3 month with dd. Th

Sorry, no advice im afraid except I had lap & dye after a failed termination, and it "worked". Would IVF work better, or have more chance of working if you checked your tube with the dye? Sorry, dont know much about this but ((hugs))

£2,000 for a lap and dye seems v expensive - ime most hospital charge around the £800-£1,200. Not sure that this helps though. Obviously NHS won't have you as a priority, either as funding or on the waiting lists as a) you're young, and b) you have a child. That said policies still vary between areas, so it is worth checking exactly how long a wait you are looking at. My personal instinct would be to use the money for IVF, but you should be able to get a private consulation which will give you more info. A consult costs £150-£250 (London prices) but is worth it.

After talking to a friend of a friend who has been have ivf I think i will go for lap and dye first so at least i will no what going on for sure hopefully have it in first week in november. She seemed to think most good clinic in my circumstances would want it done anyway. If its completley buggered they can remove it and i`ll just have to have ivf. But at least i wouldnt have to worry about ectopics. Thinking about starting accupunture or reflexology as I have heard it can help or at least help relaxation. My trouble is i just want every things to happen a lot quicker I have already been waiting 18 months. I feel ok all day but once my dd has gone to bed I just starting thinkingabout it all. My daughter seems to be baby mad at the moment and keeps on asking for a sister she asked if she could have a baby like her friend has got today(her mum has just had a baby)so every one can come and see it. I almost cried she is sweet.

Yes, there does almost seem to be even more pressure when you have one already doesn't there. Fertility treatment can be so time consuming.

I would still advise talking to a private consultant first: your hsg would have been the "dye" element of the lap and dye, so if that has concluded that the tube is blocked I'm not sure what more you're hoing for from a lay & dye. Have to say that I'm totally surprised that you would need 2 hsg's before going for IVF. Which clinic are you with?

cedar12 · 18/10/2006 09:31

I have only had one hsg. Apparentley you can see a lot more from lap and dye and can unblock small blockages in the tube at the same time.So if blockage not to bad I may not have to have ivf anyway. But would still be at risk of another ectopic. I am currentley under the princess anne hospital in southampton(nhs) but my consultant does private ops at a bupa hospital in southampton which is where I would have lap and dye. I been trying to contact him since monday to try and get answers to some questions I have as got to upset in my last appointment. Hopefully he might phone today.

OK. I would check the success rates for the op though, as I'm not sure that they are that high (esp if the hsg didn't remove the blockage).

I think your main consideration is your funding. THe NHS will fund the lap and dye as it is "diagnosis" rather than "Treatment" (bizarrely!). If it doesn't work (and again, check the success rates), then you probably won't get IVF fully funded as you already have a child (though this does vary widely from area to area).

Good luck. Don't know the hospital, but again, do check success rates - they vary widely!

FWIW I had a lap & dye after 4y ttc. One tube blocked other part blocked. Consultant wanted me to go IVF but I wanted viable tube unblocked (option given at Guys). Waiting for op to "unblock" and got preg one month later! So I would go for lap etc as will maybe give you more opportunity as clears minor obstructions. IVF is one opportunity per cycle!

cedar12 · 19/10/2006 10:29

Thanks for all the messages definitley going to have lap and dye need to know for certain if it can be unblocked. Positive thinking from now on going to start acupunture on monday. Even if the lap and dye only tells me it blocked at least we know the whole picture as hsg can only give you idea, ok if its not blocked but if it is cant alway tell to what exstent. So fingers crossed.
