PCOS ultrasound test

After ttc for almost a year and not having regular periods I have been referred for an ultrasound.

I am badly hospital and medical phobic so am terrified about it already!

Can anyone explain to me exactly what will happen so I can start working myself up to it?

Ultrasounds aren't the least bit painful. I've had many for my PCOS.

There are 2 types, the 1st you have a full bladder and they scan from your tummy. The 2nd type they ask you to remove your bottom half clothes, they normally put a blanket over you to cover you up and then insert a scanner probe with a condom on it into your vagina. This is is the better type of scan to view the ovaries. It is done with an empty bladder.

I would go with a full bladder and ask, they you can nip to the toilet if they need you to be empty.

Thank you. I'm not scared of the pain, my phobia is all based around hospitals and a loss of control. I have had CBT before to help me over come it but am still not feeling great about it. I'm at the point thoigh that if I can't manage this I would never manage child birth and so I need to get over it.

I was fully expecting to have an internal scan but only had a scan like you would for a pregnancy. Nothing scary and over relatively quickly. Good luck and I hope it goes smoothly for you! X

Like Chickens I went in expecting to have an internal scan. The sonographer said she'd try an external first and it was your typical lower belly type thing I'd seen on telly on anything featuring pregnancy! She looked at both ovaries and declared I definitely had PCOS.

I have subsequently had to have an internal ultrasound and it's not comfortable, but isn't the worst ordeal. It's basically a probe they stick up your fanjo (sounds charming, eh?) and sort of prod about. I didn't enjoy it, but it wasn't painful.

I've also had a couple of internal ultrasounds - once for PCOS diagnosis. They should tell you if it's internal (or transvaginal as they call it) beforehand. On one of these occasions they asked me to perch on the end of the bed with each leg on a stool which was not uncomfortable but slightly strange (and probably comical looking!). The other two I was just lying down with my legs up and apart (like a smear). It's just like Rufus said, they use a probe with a condom and some lube - none of them I've had has been in the least bit uncomfortable (unlike a smear!) and they ususually only last a few mins at most.
