I want to have a reversal of my tubal ligation.....it was 5 years ago at caesarean section....any experiences out there? I'm 43 and have 5 children already, I always conceived very easily..

I don't know about reversal of sterilisation, but I do know that by the age of 43 only about 10% of women can conceive and nearly half of all pregnancies will end in miscarriage. The chances of a normal pregnancy for someone of your age are not wonderful, even though you have conceived easily in the past. I would take professional advice if I were you... and for the sake of your other 5 children go for foetal neuchal screening at 11 weeks if you do conceive. It's non invasive and will give you an excellent assessment of the likely risk of chromosomal abnormalities - if the risk is high you can then go for amniocentesis. Good luck!

Thanks for that fortyplus.....I'm pretty sure i will go forward with it. I had my caesar/sterilisation privately so I'm kind of assuming that i will have to go the same way for the reversal.I have an appointment booked with the same consultant,he tried to convince me not to have it done at the time but I'd had a terrible pregnancy and it was a bit of a knee jerk reaction which i now regret as I would love to make it 6....but all your points I take into account.

Good luck, mozhe - I'm sure he'll give you good advice on your chances of success.

I just reread this and it should read 5 months ago....i blame that on lack of sleep, anyway that will certainly be more hopeful than 5 years ago I think !

Well maybe if you only had cs 5 months ago you will be in with better than average chance. But I think honestly you should be delighted with 5 healthy kids and not take chances with any more. When my ds1 was 10 days old he was admitted to hospital (nothing serious) and I stayed in overnight. A woman was in there aged early 40s and she'd had a 4th child with Downs Syndrome with major complications - hole in heart, breathing difficulties etc as their smooth muscle tissue is very slack. I had no idea that DS babies had such physical problems as well as learning difficulties. It haunted me - poor little mite couldn't breathe properly and that was when she'd been in intensive care for ages. Imagine the effect it would have on the whole family - her other 3 kids were missing her as she was in hospital all the time with the baby. Terrible.I know maternal insticts can be overwhelming, but I really don't think it's worth the risks of having more, especially as you'll need surgery to get there.

Yes I know fortyplus, but I,ve faced it x4 times already, as I was already an ' eldrely prim ' when DS1 was on the way....I 've had all available tests each pregnancy and would have if there is a next time. I don't think i would have terminated an abnormal pregnancy first time round but I certainly would now, for the very reasons you outline....I'm very prepared for there not to be a next time but something in me says' go for it...'
