Regular periods but not ovulating?

Hi ladies, just wondering if anyone else has been in my situation and what the cause/solution could be.

Ttc #1, currently on cycle 7. I'm 27, DH is 35, both non-smokers and normal weight. I have Been having regular periods since I came off the pill, though cycle length varies slightly from 28-32 days. I'm currently on cd13. Last month I decided to start trying opks as we hadn't been getting anywhere. I didn't start testing until cd13 and didn't get a positive the whole time, AF came. Thought oh well, maybe I ov early in my cycle, try again next month, so this time I started testing on cd8 as soon as AF was over. But here we are on cd13 again and still no positive. Obviously I'll keep testing but will probably get myself down to the doctors if I don't get a positive this month.

So I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this? I thought that regular periods = ovulating but maybe not!

Thanks angelaham, I will def keep testing for the rest of this month, just thinking ahead I guess and thinking the worst!

I bought ovulation kits this time when TTC. Pretty sure I did it right and never got a positive but did get pregnant and periods were regular so I'm pretty sure I was ovulating every month. Good luck!

I was using opk and I never got a positive but got pregnant twice ( first was a mmc second is my ds). Even when I had a proper blood test it showed I hadn't ovulated. Dr called me in to discuss it and I was pregnant! They couldn't explain it!

Me624 · 26/10/2014 20:44

Well it's good to know that others have experienced opks not being accurate. From my google research it seems like having regular periods but not ovulating would be pretty uncommon. Will just stick with it and see what happens!

It might be worth going to dr anyway. Mine was really good and arranged the blood test to put my mind at rest (was after mmc though so they were being very nice!)

Annoyingly you can have a period and not ovulate. I had heavy periods every month and no ovulation so got fertility drugs. Clomid for three months which didn't agree with me then another one not available in the UK . First month with that one resulted in dd Smile Smile

i have been using OPK's as well, and all have been negative despite me having EWCM, and definite ovulation pain! maybe they do not work for everyone, or you have a very short LSH surge window? i figered i missed mine, as was only using them every 24hours (due to being at work etc).
Fingers crossed for us! Smile

Cogitosum I think you're right - a trip to the docs will help reassure me.

Jpop - how did you figure out that you weren't ovulating? Glad to hear the drugs worked.

Chubbocat I've only been testing once a day too - don't really fancy trying it at work!

I've found that tracking my BBT has kept me sane by letting me know I haven't OV'd; I'm on CD61!

I eventually had to attend a fertility clinic. To make things trickier I only have one tube so even less chance of conceiving. Various blood tests and scans showed eventually that I also have polycystic ovaries. Ivf didn't work twice then we somehow conceived DS by 'accident'. When it came to trying for dc2 we had to have treatment. It's amazing what our bodies can do! I still can't believe I have two children sometimes after being told I would never have any. Grin

chubbocat · 28/10/2014 09:33

yeah, have no idea how people can test more than once a day! plus i do shift work, so unfortunately cant really test at the same time every day. I have given up on them!
I have read that some people just dont have a high enough LSH surge for the OPK to read.
I have binned mine, as they were just causing me more stress!

CatsCantFlyFast · 28/10/2014 09:39

Are you using cheap OPK sticks (eg from Amazon/eBay) or a digital ovulation predictor? I find the cheap sticks helpful as you will start to see a second line as your hormone levels start to rise.
Perfectly possible and more common than you would think to have periods but not ovulate. It's also quite common for cycles to take a long time to regulate after coming off the pill,so IF you aren't ovulating that may be the reason(mine took 14 months)
Testing twice a day shouldn't be too tough- first thing on a morning and again when you get home after work. I would say it's worth it for a few cycles to try and identify what is happening. And as already mentioned, charting bbt is another way to understand what is happening

Me624 · 28/10/2014 21:04

I've been using cheap sticks from amazon. Just tested today (CD15) and got what I am 95% sure is a positive! It's a much, much darker line than anything I've had before, not quite as dark as the control line but every other day the test line has been barely there at all. I'm taking it as a positive anyway! Warned DH that we're dtd tonight and tomorrow to try and take advantage.

OP posts:
CatsCantFlyFast · 29/10/2014 09:39

Keep dtd for at least 3 days after your positive... A positive OPK can mean;
Ovulation has already happened
Or
Ovulation will happen within the next 48 hours

So there's a chance you won't ovulate until Friday. So you want to be having sex until Saturday just to ensure all bases are covered

Good luck

Me624 · 29/10/2014 13:39

Thanks notwithoutmymerkin. The instructions with my opks say that a positive means ovulation will happen in the next 12-36 hours, which is why I thought last night and today would be enough, but if you reckon 48 hours then maybe we keep going. All the testing is pretty new to me!
