Anyone TTC after vasectomy reversal op?

Hi! Newbie to the forums :) we have 2 children, 7 and 5 and hubby had a vasectomy almost 5 years ago.... Almost as soon as our youngest was born. He realised quickly after that it was a big mistake. We're speaking with our chosen surgeon in a week and booking the reversal, then it's all aboard the TTC train as soon as he's all healed up :) would love to have some buddies along the way :) it's going to be a fairly long journey I feel, our eldest took a year to conceive our youngest took 9 months with a early mc in between.

Hi,
My dh had a vr with Duncan Harriss in March and we are still ttc. There is also a secret facebook group for ttc after a vr which is full of lovely supportive ladies who have kept me sane over the last few months lol! I can add you if you are interested in joining.
AF came today which is so disappointing as i was really hoping for a christmas bfp. We had our SA done after 6 months and it was not great. Low count, low motility and 100% asa's, but I won't give up hope that we will have our baby, have chosen names already!
Good luck to all of you, lets hope we all get our bfps in 2015 x

spamanderson · 22/12/2014 19:24

Hi mum2some
Sorry it's not resulted in pregnancy yet but the fact that sperm are getting through is great. Is your DH doing anything to improve his sperm count and motility? DH was convinced we'd get a BFP by April next year... Talk about putting pressure on it! We've started TTC-ing now as he had his op 2.5 weeks ago. Chances are only one testicle is working as one was damaged so fingers crossed that that one is producing super sperm! I have a list of names too :/ really hope we get to use them!
Good luck for TTC-ing, 2015 will hopefully be an amazing year for us all :)

Hi,
Good luck ttc, lets hope 2015 is a great year for baby making!
My dh has only started taking vitamins a month ago because I was getting so frustrated that this one small thing could make all the difference so I'm hoping that the vitamins will give us a bfp in feb, just before our 1 yr vr anniversary. He's taking vit c and zinc, wellman conception multi vit, l'arginine and l'carnitine. Is your dh taking anything?
Have a lovely Christmas x

wanting1more · 23/12/2014 01:41

Hiya....my OH is having his VR on 19/01/15.

Both nervous and really worried it won't work....any words of wisdom???

spamanderson · 23/12/2014 11:06

mum2some My DH is taking Wellman conception tabs as well. I've ready that a handful of Brazil nuts a day is supposed to be good too!
wanging Eeek, good luck! Erm, just make sure he rests. I got hubby to lie on the sofa for about 4 days in between a teeny potter about every so often. I would recommend him wearing pants ( like those speedo style!) if he's a boxer wearer as hubby has had pain and opened a wound a tiny bit when he wore boxers. We went and bought him some fetching pants to wear :) they don't look good but they give the much needed support! If he's given cocodamol as pain relief, get him to drink some orange juice during the day to make sure they don't bung him up, not another discomfort he'll want on top of sore balls!

Good luck wanting1more, I hope it all goes well and you get your bfp next year x

spamanderson · 29/12/2014 10:01

Grrr, DHs stitches dissolved and the wounds have opened up :( he's in pain now :( he went to go on boxing day who could only steri strip but he's now at work in more pain so wondering if we have to take him to a&he to be re-sutured or glued and get antibiotics as the drs can't do anything other than steri strip and antibiotics. I'm panicking now that its going to spread and damage the testicles :(

My OH seems to think he will be up and back to normal within a few days. Our consultant said 2 weeks off work....first week sofa rest. :)

Hope you both get ur bfp's soon. X and both hubby's are ship shape and feeling fine :)

spamanderson · 30/12/2014 12:26

Don't let him go back to work that quickly wanting. He needs at least a week off work to rest. My DH took his week off, went back to work for a week and is now signed off again for a week as his stitches have come open! He's now got to rest and take antibiotics for a week in the hopes of it finally healing up properly. He had the op 25 days ago now. If you can get him to take the 2 weeks off, that would possibly be best but AT LEAST the week. Just think what a waste of time and effort (and not to mention cash!) it would be for him to rush back to work and cause the tubes to scar up instead of healing neatly. You'd be back at square one again.

wanting definitely need a week of safa rest my OH was supprised at the amount of pain, compared to other operations it seems quite a painful recovery so he will appreciate sitting I think when the time comes, hubby is all ok now though I think. I'm still really worried its not worked or that it has worked and it will be me that has issues, I think we just need to try thinking positively as hard as that is, fingers crossed for you x
spam so sorry to hear your OH stitches have come open! Hopefully he can be all healed up before your next fertile period or maybe your BFP will come! (been following the January bus but not really had time to keep up).

spamanderson · 30/12/2014 18:00

Hiya mrs I was wondering where you'd go to! Are you on cycle 1 at the mo? He's quite happy as he's been told to take the week off work to rest while he takes anti biotics to make sure it's all ok. Thankfully it's just the surface that hasn't healed, the important bits are ok :) How's your DH getting on now? Yeah I'm hoping he'll be all ok in time for my next fertile period but I'm hoping I'm preggy already! Luckily I'm a late ov'er so it's not til cd19 ish that he needs to be ready and willing again ;) I'm still worrying too that it won't have worked :( Did your surgeon say how long it would be when he's required to do a sample for testing? I will be blooming disraught if it comes back with nothing present :(

OP posts:
mrsstickll · 30/12/2014 18:19

Yes cycle 1, think I ov yesterday, Af due 12th January, everything seems ok for hubby he seems to have a renewed interest in dtd lol think the vasectomy obviously had affects on his mind that he didn't realise. Surgeon said 12 weeks after op for test which at the time seemed so far away but now time seems to be going so quickly, I don't know what I would do if the tests came back with no sperm. When are your tests? I'm not getting my hopes up this cycle just seeing it as a practice run lol

spamanderson · 30/12/2014 18:51

Ha ha funny you say that. DH is a unusual man, he's not a sex oriented man at all, once or twice a month is fine for him but he says he's had 'naughty' dreams so I wonder if it's a psychological thing or if maybe the reconnecting of the testicles boosts their testosterone or something?
The surgeon just said that they'd contact in a couple of months to arrange the tests. I'm going to be so nervous. I wonder how long the wait is for the results?! Can you believe tomorrow is New Years Eve?! I mean where has this year gone! It's 25 days since DH had his op so I suppose another 2 months ish to wait until we find out for sure if we have a chance or not!

I didn't want to get my hopes up for this cycle at all but I've had this 'feeling' since we started that this was going to be a good month. I'm getting so many symptoms now. DH says he thinks I could be as well as the surgeon did say that one of them was 'ready to go' as there was sperm there.

OP posts:
mrsstickll · 30/12/2014 18:58

I tried googling it but I guess not many men are going to admit to a change in sex drive after a vasectomy. How do people do this TWW thing every month it's like some form of torture. I guess you can't really get a better result than "ready to go" fingers crossed for you, I'm excited for you hehe

spamanderson · 30/12/2014 21:20

There's a couple of bits online that say men have found an increase in libido but general consensus is that it shouldn't affect it either way. Just read something that says rates of success can be up to 97% and 70% for a pregnancy as a result for those having the between 5 and 10 years. It also said that if sperm is seen during the op, the chances go up to 90%. The stats on that seem a little inflated but I feel a bit more positive :) I know! I'm lucky in a way (although it's supposedly makes it harder to conceive and hold on to a baby) as I have a short LP, around 9 days from ov to AF so I don't have as long to wait but it's still blooming torture. Tmi but going to the loo dreading to find that AF has started :(
How exciting is it all though, hopefully this time next year we'll have babies or at least be pregnant :)

Happy new year ladies.

Hope you and your OH are all well and dtd and hopefully baby making :)

BobblesAndBells · 05/01/2015 23:13

Hello ladies,

I've NCed so I can join in here and talk openly with you all.

My DP had a VR with Duncan Harriss 18 months ago. He was 12 years post vasectomy, so we were aware that we had reduced odds of it going well.

Neither of us have any DCs. I'm 35.

The operation was a complete success. His 3 month SA showed completely normal levels of sperm. Needless to say I was over the moon and a blubbering wreck when the results came in!

We have been ttc since, and have had no success Sad but at least I know it's not down to him. Never have I been so happy to say he's 'normal'.

As for our experience of the whole process - I couldn't praise Mr Harriss enough. The whole setup was fantastic, the hospital were wonderful. Mr Harriss himself was lovely.

DP had some serious swelling for about a week after the op (think bollocks the size of grapefruit..), but I forced him to do as little as possible. He was fine.

So I'm happy to answer any questions from anyone about to embark on the process, and maybe share our ttc journey together.

mrsstickll · 06/01/2015 11:01

Happy new year wanting 2 weeks to go, not long now, how you feeling?

bobbles fantastic news, I' so worried about the tests, how long did it take for the results to come back? Did your DP take any vitamins to help the sperm on its way to recovery? CD 20 of cycle #1 here, I'm obviously not expecting much but spam has had her BFP this month gives me hope!

slb29 · 06/01/2015 11:47

Hi, new to this site. DP had the big V about 7 years ago in his previous relationship after 2 children. I've got no children ( yet ) and at 29 (plus the amount of time it can take to concieve) im anxious to get the ball rolling (excuse the pun Grin )...alas partner is dragging his feet about it (think its more nerves than anything). I've managed to narrow it down to Mr Hariss (Nottingham) or Mr Dawson (Hartlepool). Anyone got any experience with these to surgeons? Plus any ttc tips and advice would be appreciated Smile

spamanderson · 06/01/2015 12:37

Hi ladies! Sorry I haven't been in in a little while :) hopefully we can bring a bit of hope as I got my BFP less than a month after reversal! I'm approx 4 weeks pregnant! Its a miracle to us, dd1 took 12 months of no protection, dd2 took 9 months TTC. It's a blooming good job as since the middle of last month he's had a few issues with his wounds :( really praying this bub sticks as Im wondering if the issues he's having now are going to affect the tubes :/
How's your DH doing now his op isn't too far away wanting? Getting excited now?
Oh that's good bobbles that the operation has been a success! Have you spoken to drs to have your fertility checked?
slb I have heard a lot of good reviews about Dr Harriss. We used Dr Eaton in Sandrigham Hospital (Kings Lynn) :)
How are you getting on mrsstickll? Have you ov'd yet this cycle?

Anyone TTC after vasectomy reversal op?

Hiya

mrs we are real busy trying to just plan logistics. :) he is nervous and excited....but im just excited spam , got some arnica from Holland and Barrett and have gone on and on at my OH about him taking it easy after op.

We considered Duncan Harriss. But changed our mind and have opted for Mr swinn at Gatwick.

My OH is 13y post V. But was told my age (29) and that I've had children puts our chances to about 70% of it working.....:)

Just really hope it works...as we wouldn't ever go down ivf route (he also has his own children) also not to mention the waste of ££££ if it doesn't work also.

Btw huge congrats spam on your BFP. Did I miss that or was that your way of telling us?? X

mrsstickll · 06/01/2015 14:28

spam how are your dh's wounds doing are they still not healing?

Some good looking tests there, it's so strange positive tests are so pleasing to the eye I love looking at lines, been following the January bus but really can't keep up lol.

Pretty sure I ov on cd 12, so 8dpo feel like I normally do before Af, sore boobs, pmt etc boo.

spamanderson · 06/01/2015 22:45

Sorry wanting I hadn't announced in here! I've been reading the classic threads too much and distracting myself!
Boo to AF mrs there's still a chance it could be preggy hormones instead though, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :D he has a slight infection in one side again. It's the side they had to do the most work on so I'm not sure if that's why? It is only surface though, they're happy it's not internal as the wounds are healed deeply, it's just the surface skin which is taking its time. It's an awkward area though isn't it, not the smoothest skin to seal up, not to mention how much it moves, plus being warm etc.
really hoping this baby sticks. So looking forward to telling dd1 (dd2 is away with the fairies so won't really have much of an effect on her yet!). I'm so bloody bad tempered but I guess that's a wonderful mix of pregnancy hormones, not being on the pill which controlled my hormones, lack of caffeine plus Im not taking my anxiety meds either as they can cause defects. I'd never forgive myself if I caused something which was avoidable. I'm doing nothing but shout at the moment, I hate being so grumpy :( going to call the drs tomorrow to book my appointment fir them to 'confirm' I'm pregnant.... Tempted to take the million tests I've done in instead! I've git the frer and CB digi tests stored away to look at! Sad huh!

BobblesAndBells · 06/01/2015 23:06

Wow congratulations Spam!!!

mrsstickll you asked how long it took for us to get the SA results. He went for the test in the morning, we went shopping, drove home (about 2.5 hour drive), and the results were there waiting for me in an email Shock.

I'd highly recommend Duncan Harriss. Can't fault him.

I haven't had any fertility tests, apart from Day 21 bloods, which showed low progesterone, so it could be me that's faulty. I started a new job last year so I've been focussing on that and had put TTC on the back burner.

But new year new start, it's back on the TTC bus for us!

Good luck ladies.
