Slightly embarassing question

given that I have 2 dc already, we are trying for number 3 and I have just realised I am not sure how it all works.
So am I right in thinking that conception only occurs on the day you ovulate so basically there is no reproductive point in having sex at any other point ( excluding actual enjoyment). So basically there are only 2 days when you need to have sex and that's your only chance to conceive for that month? Is this right? I should really know all this. Blush

You can only conceive when you ovulate yes.

BUT sperm can live for up to five days ish in your body so you could have sex today and technically conceive at the weekend. The egg is only healthy for around 12 hours after it is released, occasionally longer but from a couple of days post ovulation, you realistically won't conceive until the next month.

If you are normally fertile though, which it sounds like you are, having sex every 2-3 days through your cycle or even just up to and including ovulation, should be enough.

Good luck!

Thanks Showy - should have really known that. So they days before and the days of ovulation but not really after.

Shiny Your best bet is to dtd every other day until ovulation and many of us then do it every day for a few days.

But yes there is only technically a few days you can conceive.

Its best to keep the sperm topped up thought so theres enough up there when the egg is released.

If you are not actually sure when you ovulate it's best to have sex at least three times a week. If you have been temping and have a regular cycle then yes, sperm can survive for 5-7 days on excellent quality cervical fluid. More likely though is that it might hang around for a few days. Lots of people find the SMEP (sperm meets egg plan) very effective. Could be worth a read. Good luck x

Wow had no idea it was so complicated this is our first month ttc dc3 so all a bit new, and concious of age as an added complication.
But not sure when I ovulate, but will try for 3 times a week.
Thanks for your help

Shiny it's not complicated but it really depends on how you want to play it.

If you are a regular 28 dayer then you probably ovulate around day 14. Look out for slippery cervical mucus and start having sex from that point.
