Ladies I just need some advice on cervical mucus as I'm trying to get to grips with the different consistency. Firstly do you do a visual check ie what you see in knickers and what you wipe, or do you do a physical test by seeing what's inside you? I've heard that you can check what's sitting in your vag opening with your fingers. I'm just wondering what is the best test.
Secondly I'm struggling with what the difference is between egg whites and school glue type mucus and then what is the beat indicator of ovulating?
Sorry for all the questions!

Hi, its all very confusing but i typed into google cervical mucus stages and the first link came up with a website showing you different types of mucus as i was just as confused as you,

i sometimes see the mucus in my knickers other times when i wipe or if i check, egg white mucus is the discharge that you usually get when ovulating, it is clear and if you can stretch it between your two fingers then its egg white, school glue is kind of creamy and thick, which i have started to notice i get before i come on,
hope this helps

Hi blue I think baby centre shows pics of what it should look like. I never get much in knickers so always do physical test. I believe egg white should stretch up to 5cm between 2 fingers without breaking whereas creamy is sticky and not stretchy. It is all a bit of a mystery though!

Egg white mucus looks just like...egg white. For me is starts as a small blob of clear jelly usually 4-5 days before ovulation. I feel this falling down/out into my knickers. This becomes more hydrated and ends up very watery and stretchy right before ovulation. This is the most fertile mucus as it nourishes the sperm allowing them to reach their final destination. I observed by wiping after going to the loo, urine will be absorbed into the loo paper whereas the mucus will sit on top of the paper and be obvious to see. You will feel 'wet' at the entrance of your vagina when it is at its most copious, this is when you are most fertile and will be roughly 1-2 days before ovulation.

After ovulation the mucus dries up very quickly, there maybe other types of mucus present which look like cream coloured moisturiser or more of a sticky consistency. This is not fertile mucus.

Thanks so much for the replies and advice ladies. Feel stupidly naive about all of this!
