hello ... i am looking for advice on exercise whilst trying to conceive. i have just joined a women's football league and hope i am not crazy to be playing for the next 8 weeks. i start play tonight and am ovulating today or in next couple of days. (saw follicle ready to go on ultrasound last night!)
does anyone know if strenuous exercise can interfere with conception?? i am already quite fit and jog a few times a week. just not sure if jogging, football and the like might interfere with semen once it's up there, and potential implantation. i forgot to ask my doctor.

With football being a contact sport I don't think it's a good idea.

Jogging etc, if you've been doing it a long time should be fine.

I think that it isn't recommended that you start a NEW exercise regime while TTC.

juicylucy, thanks for answering. it's such a dilemma because i am trying to take my mind off ttc and meet some new people. a friend helped organise the league so i just instantly signed up since it seemed to tick my - keep fit, get out more and socialize boxes. i may just see how it goes and then i can always quit if i get pregnant. i have to assume that the semen needs to be in the cervix to fertilise and that once it's up there, it won't come out! i get paranoid though to go for a jog after sex on fertile days.

Hi chandellina, your question sparked my interest, as I had been wondering the same when I was TTC. I have just conceived after several months trying, and one of the things that was different about this month was that I didn't jog for at about 10 days after the fertile days, as we were on holiday. Normally I go twice a week. I couldn't help wondering if all the stuff was getting bounced out?! Not much help really as obviously I have no idea if that really had any effect. Good luck x x

Regular excercise, including even jogging and impact aerobics will not lower your chances of getting pregnant, nor will it increase your risks for miscarriage. If you've been following a regular plan for at least six months prior to conception then you're okay!

The benefits of regular excercise before, during and after conception are many and include:

  • smoother pregnancies.
  • faster and easier labors with less need for induction.
  • returning to normal body weight much sooner.
  • reduced weight gain during the pregnancy
  • improved mood and sleeping patterns
  • less discomforts during pregnancy such as backaches and swelling

Found the above on the internet-HTH XX

edie and cacaboo, thanks for answering. i played last night and had a blast but my instincts are telling me to take a break from bouncy exercise in the week or so post-ovulation, just in case it could interfere with implantation.
cheers...

are sit ups ok to do whilst ttc?

rubyroo · 27/09/2006 20:41

hi iwas running twice a week but read on internet that it lengthens your cycle. i wasn't training for a marathon or anything but decided to just do pilates, yoga etc while ttc. i'm sure it is all fine but i was having long cycles and this month everything seemed to work ok. too soon to know how well!! sooo it seems to have worked for me. hope that helps

Was running 5 Km 3 times a week and going for a twenty minute swim if I had the chance when fell pregnant. Continued throughout first trimester and actually upped it to running 5 times a week at 10 weeks (though for 3 km rather than the 5). Stopped all exercise with ds1 and feel much better for keeping it up.
Suppose the correct answer is to follow your instincts, but that's what I did.

well, i definitely intend to keep exercising when/if i fall pregnant. i have actually been pregnant twice already but miscarried both times. (subsequent investigations have revealed no underlying condition so apparently just bad luck and/or low progesterone, which i do have a problem with.) the first time my symptoms suddenly went away the same day i had gone for a long jog and came home feeling slightly feverish. a few days later i went jogging and felt a pulling sensation in my abdomen and found a big yellowish/brownish spot on my knickers. i found out two weeks later the embryo had stopped developing around then. probably a coincidence and could have been anything but that was enough to put me off exercise the second time around. well that made no difference and i only ended up about a stone heavier so i went back to jogging. i think next time i will keep jogging but just thought these days around ovulation/implantation it might be a good idea to skip it. i also do yoga and would just mention that there are certain poses that shouldn't be done in the first trimester. (do a google if in doubt.) cheers and baby dust.

If its any help, Zita West (fertility guru) recommends no strenuous exercise whatsoever post ovulation - certainly no gym, and no other stenuous sports. She suggests that the only appropriate exercise is walking. I am putting her suggestions to the est this month ...

I gave up kickboxing due to things like that make more male hormones go around your body so my Doctor said
