Inositol for PCOS

This might be a bit niche but does anyone with PCO/PCOS have any experience with Inositol? I’ve been taking it for a few months (4,000mg daily) and it made my first two cycles really long (38 and 44 days). I got a bit worried and have reduced the dose to 2,000mg per day this cycle and I’ve just ovulated on Day 15. With this in mind, I’m not too sure whether to stick with this dosage? I’m 36, trying for number 1 for 15 months and am getting a bit fed up with this TTC business. :)

Any advice/experiences with Inositol gratefully received!

Hi, I am afraid I cannot offer advice, I have just started using it few days ago, but I would probably stick to the lower dosage seeing that it works better for you. I am on 4000mg- let's see what it does to my cycles. I have decided to stay away from Clomid for now and try Inositol as a more natural way.

Hope you get more relevant answers too.

Thanks Casiopeia! I'm seeing a consultant for the first time this morning at the hospital and so I'll see what she says about it.

Interestingly, the 'Sense about Science' experts on the Mumsnet fertility thread mentioned that there are some good results with inositol for women with PCOS. It's certainly doing something given the effect on my my cycles - just not sure if it's good or bad!

I read that inositol takes six months to have an effect. Coincidentally, I got pregnant six months after I started taking it, after trying for more than four years. The research, particularly from Italy, does suggest that it is very helpful.

SolomanDaisy · 20/09/2014 08:53

I think it has to be myo inositol btw,not just any sort.

casiopeia · 20/09/2014 09:03

daisy , 6 months seems like forever, but thank you for a positive story and congrats Smile!

Crumbelina, SolomanDaisy, Did you also lose any weight? I read that was one of the ' side effects', I could do with getting rid of half a stone that is not budging - pure vanity, (though I'd much rathed grow a baby belly if I could chose Smile)

SolomanDaisy · 20/09/2014 09:10

I did lose weight, it I was also dieting and exercising.

casiopeia · 20/09/2014 09:25

SolomanDaisy, great, I do eat relatively well and exercise, but since getting of the pill, I put on a bit and I can't get rid of it however hard I try- I tried tweaks in diet and exercise, though nothing too radical as I don't want to mess up my cycles; it's not really my ultimate goal, but would be a welcome side effect Grin

Did you take 4000mg for 6 months then or different dosage?

casiopeia · 20/09/2014 09:30

Crumbelina were you cycles shorter before Inositol and were they regular? Mine were all over the place, now seem to have settled between 33-38 days and I hope Inositol will shorten them just a little.

Crumbelina · 20/09/2014 09:55

Congrats Daisy! Stories like that keep me positive!

No weight loss as far I can tell, although my weight is generally ok.

My cycles before were irregular but almost always in the range of 32-36 days with a couple of them hitting 40/41 days. After a lot of Googling I did find a few people who said that it made their first cycles on inositol really long before it settled down.

My dosage of Inositol is 1700 a day, its worked twice for me in the first month I fell pregnant twice (Altho lost both to a late miscarriage) but now on it again hoping it will sort my peroids out. Good luck ladies!

Crumbelina · 20/09/2014 10:30

Oh, I'm so sorry - MrsChocolate. That must have been awful for you. Sad I've been a right misery this week after losing out on a job and a house I reallh wanted. That really puts it into perpective. Lots of luck for the future!
Thinking about the dosage, maybe 4000mg is too high. Sitting in the consultant waiting room now so hopefully she can advise.

Sorry I am on 650mg x3 a day - I thought it was 600mg when I posted earlier... 4000mg seems a lot too me!
Fingers crossed with your appointment :)
It wasn't to make you feel bad sorry was meant to put a good spin on it! That it does work!

Crumbelina · 20/09/2014 12:41

Oh sorry Mrs Chocolate - it does make me feel positive and makes me appreciate that I shouldn't be moaning about things that aren't that important in the grand scheme of things.

Appointment went well, although she didn't know about inositol! Bit surprising (maybe she knows it by another name) but I think I'll keep the dose at 2,000mg and see how I go. I have an official diagnosis of PCOS and have a flurry of tests to do as well as being put on Clomid. I'm so glad I got to see her - it's been a long wait of tests and pestering GPs.
