Hi looking for some advice. Iv just come off the depo injection had my last injection in June.should of had my next injection on 2nd September. This last week iv been having pains in my abdomen. It's not like period pains as it's from bottom of my ribs downwards. Although saying that iv not had a period in about six years with being on depo. Iv also been feeling sick on and off to. Now is this all a sign of the injection as I'm sure I couldn't already be pregnant after iv read it takes months for depo to come out of your system? Please help as I'm trying for my first baby and have nothing to compare to. Thanks

Hi Lea,

I was on the depo for 10 years.

It took 8 months for my periods to come back but I did have various symptoms of it a few months before.

Although my periods came back I found out I wasnt ovulating, it took 15 months for me to start ovulating. 18 months down the line and im still not pg.

The depo is a fairly strong contraceptive and it can cause a fair few side effects when you come off, hopefully your body sorts itself out quickly.

Hi there, some people can get pregnant really quickly after coming off of Depo (or even whilst on Depo, it's not 100% effective) but for most of us it can take up to 2 years for pre-depo fertility to return (average 12-18 months). I had my last injection in February, still no periods, not entirely sure if I am ovulating (going to test with OPK's this month) but it could just be your body starting to get ready for periods again. I have all sort of cramps, PMS type symptoms, etc. and no periods! My doctor has now put me on a high level of progesterone to kick start my periods, but there's no guarantee it'll work!

Good luck! And make sure you take folic acid and vitamin D supplements whilst TTC :)

Thanks not been so bad today. I didn't know how long it takes to get out of your system until recently so feel really down now that it's going to take so long. Would of been nice to have known all the facts when I was put on depo. Have started with folic acid already. Don't know if I should visit the doctors and have a chat about everything with them

Every doctor I have seen about it has told me to wait, it's only since seeing a new doctor about something unrelated (ear infection) and mentioning it in passing that he said to try these tablets, and he only said it because I told him I was TTC. The tabs he gave me are the ones you take to lighten or stop periods, which sounds crazy, but I think the idea is you take a high dose for 10 days and then when you stop your body thinks it's time for a period and hey presto, you get one (or that's the plan). I'm 4 days in :)

I wish they told you facts before going on Depo, it's something I am quite angry about and only stopped when I did because I was told of the risks to bone thinning, but when I went on it in 2009 I wasn't told any of this!

I wish they had told me more to.

However I did know it could take up to a year which is why I came off it before we were ready to ttc but its still taken 18 months so far its just bloody annoying

All the doctors I talked to told me to wait to, I did manage to get checked once because when AF finally came back I had a random month long period one month!

Didnt get anything else until after ttc for year and then found out I wasnt ovulating.

Also found out your not supposed to be on depo for long when your young as it can heighten your chances of bone problems especially osteoporosis (I was on it for 10 years from 14).
